Cheapest way to get a new Toyota key (not the valet key)?

Only glanced through, but all I had was the "VALET" key when I bought mine, doesn't jave the immobilized so the locksmiths at work took my key and cut me some standard keys without the "valet" cuts in it.
Works great, any locksmith should be able to do that for ya

I have a 97 Limited and there is no immobilizer chip.

Have you called the dealership and given them your VIN#?


You can just call them, give them the VIN # and ask:
a) does it have an immobilizer chip?
b) how much for the new key?
c) when can I pick it up?
d) where are you located?


Once you have those details post here how it went.

It seems to be plastic. I have many keys.

I had a new key made at the dealership in Santa Cruz based on my VIN a few years ago. It was more expensive then Home Depo but still not that bad.

He might not have been BSing you. My local Dealer cut me one for free. Worst case it would be $15-20

my dealerships cut a new one off the vin number and it cost me $1.75...

i use it as my spare, it stays in my wallet.

key sticking

I have an 01 Limited. when placing key in the ignition at times the keys doesn't slide in smoothly, it sticks and or gets stuck. after few attempts I get the key all the way in, at times it doesn't turn, but after a few more attempts it does slide fine and starts up. Now, its sticking more and only turning a 1/4 of the way. I have 3 keys with the black rubber and they all seem to do the same. I called the dealer and I do have a transponder key and I can get a new key for $60, plus $60 to program.

Before I buy a new key, I bought a product at Auto Zone. Extra fine Dry Powder Graphite lube and the parts guy said its safe to put some of this inside the ignition. Can someone please confirm its okay to pour some of the graphite powder in my ignition, or is there another product I should try first.

1st ever post on here guys so bear with me

First off, for all of those fellow T4R owners out there that has AAA just call them! Tell them you have lost your keys and need a new one. If you have a runner that is a transponder equipped ignition it will cost more then a regular key due to having to program it. If your a basic member AAA will cover $50 and a plus member $100 toward the cost of the key and they will send a locksmith wherever you are.
Now this is the important part, if you have a TR47- or X217 key then you will want to keep in mind that one day, you don't know when but one day your ignition will freeze up on you. Toyota used what's called split wafers in their ignition to help against picking the locks and it works great, however those wafers are very susceptible to dirt and grim and bending. So while the locksmith is taking your ignition apart to read the wafers for your new key ask him to leave out the split wafers, if he's cool he will know to do it anyways but just make sure to get rid of them, it will save you time and money in the long run.

Dry Graphite lube is a-ok for the ignition cylinder.

Adding to what was already mentioned

I got mine from the dealer. All I had to do was bring my ID and registration, cost $8 and they cut it using the VIN
