check engine and timing belt lights

Hello everyone,

I have a very strange problem with my 1991 surf 3L.
The check engine and timing belt lights comes on after the car is shut-off.
The lights go off when the car is on.
Please, some suggestions.

Random thought........get the engine checked out w/a computer, and, maybe fix your timing chain????? How many miles on that timing chain?? Is it overdue milage wise?? Some warning lights are milage based I think. I don't have that light, so I can't say 100%

Timing belt light? Thats a new one....

Is the key in the "OFF" position?

The timing chain looks pretty new.
And yes. the key is in off position. even without the key inserted the lights both check engine and timing belt comes on.
when the car started the lights go off.

Typically it is the plastic chain guides that wear down with your timing chain. The chain itself usually looks good. You may have to just get someone with a computer code reader to plug in and find out why the engine light is coming on. With so many vehicles that can be just an oxygen sensor, but it turning off when running is weird.
