Check engine light on + Trac off light on + 4LO blinking= ??????

Engine light / Trac Off Light / 4 low (blinking)

Code for mine came back as P0020 camshaft timing control circuit malfunction.
The Toyota dealership tried to clear the code and it wouldn't go away.
Turned out to be a wire on the connector for the oil control valave = frayed & broke. They soldered the wire together, cleared the code & I was back on the road. 2012 Limited 4Runner.

Check light , trac light on and 4lo flashing

This happened to me two days ago, dearler traced it to be the neural safety switch. When it happened I couldn’t get shifter into Drive and it didn’t shift smoothly.
Tech got the lights off and reset them, said the switch will fail again and the lights will come back on. He said to wait till it failed again as it could be quite awhile before it fails completely. Still able to drive it normally, you just won’t be able to engage cruise or 4lo.
It’s happened before and both times it was after I’d been on the trail. Not sure if that’s just coincidence.
Oh and the switch and install is $613 CAN

I have the exact issue on my 2015 SR5 - it seems to flare up after it rains or snows. But yesterday it was really bad - and the truck kept slipping out of gear.

I have the same exact issue but I know EXACTLY what will happen when i bring it to the dealer: "We looked and didn't see anything wrong...that will be $600".

If it’s happening after it rains or snows it sounds like it’s a connector issue somewhere. Either there is corrosion built up or the connector is not solidly pushed together or a wire is exposed.

You can get your trouble codes read at an auto parts store like AutoZone or Advance Auto. They will plug a handheld device under the dash. The code will be something like P420. It will indicate a cause for the malfunction like major evap leak or cylinder number 2 misfire. This will get you headed in the right direction diagnostically.

There is both basic and technical advice here. We all knew nothing at one point. This is a great place to learn all about your 4runner.

flashing lights and gears slipping after prolonged rain

I've been having the exact same issues too on my 2015 SR5. Plus the gears slip at the same time.

I'l start with an apology, I'm not a mechanic OK? I'm tired of getting my face ripped off by the know it alls. So please forgive my ignorance in such matters.

So I'll get to the point:

This only happens after it's been raining alot:

The check engine, 4 Low, and track off lights all flash, AND, the truck keeps slipping out of gear. Then after a dry day or 2 the truck stops slipping out of gear, then a day later, the lights stop flashing.

Also - when the truck is slipping gears, moving the shifter from park to reverse to drive feels rubbery, less engaged.

The flashing lights and gear slipping seem, I repeat, seem related, they arrive and depart at the same time.

It's going to the dealership in a few weeks for the fuel pump recall, but this is exactly the kind of thing they wont see unless it's actually happening when they drive it. Otherwise it's "we couldn't find anything" accompanied by a massive bill.

I'd be harpy to answer any questions that might help clarify my layman's writing.

Would highly recommend going with a ODBii Bluetooth scanner, and getting an accompanying app like Torque/Car Scanner. The one below is for Android phones, they have Carista and other ones for Apples. But the ODBii scanners are 20 bucks, maybe spend 3 bucks on the paid app if you need to, and you can get the diagnostic detail of what the light is. Also helps where you can make adjustments to the settings of the truck like how long you want your headlights on etc.

I ended up getting mine for another vehicle, but the thing is awesome and cheap, and gives you an idea of what may be going on without feeling like the dealer/mechanic is gonna fleece you for other stuff.
