Check Engine Light...try to bear with me here

So i had my runner smogged the day I took her home and as soon as I left the guy's house, the check engine light turned on (thank god the smog had already prevailed [CA sucks!]). When im sitting at light, it'll idle no problem but every and then-the RPM's will blip just past 1200 and then settle back down to 600-800 where it should be. I've recently just made the transition to 4x4 vehicles as I have been a BMW guy for some time (don't hate), I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the idle control valve. I checked the diagram under the hood and in the routing schematic, there's some sort of idle control module. Could this be the source of the problem? Your thoughts please kind forum friends!!!

That truck has OBI, you don't need to go digital. You can pull the code yourself. All you will do is jumper 2 connections in your engine box. When you do this, it will place it into diagnose mode. You will turn the key to ON, not start and you will count the "blinks" of the check engine light. This will correspond with a code, that code a problem.

Not hard and it should be your first step. Also, for OBII cars (95 and on). Autozone will pull codes for free. Having a code is a good start, otherwise you just sit there and list all kinds of ****...



Edit: I don't think an idle control valve would pop a code. THe computer in these are really small compared to today.. It only has a handful of sensors and about 20 codes total..


At least pulling a code can get you in the right direction.
 
Google. Directions specific for a v6, if they are even different, are out there. They are on here.

I was/am at work. Use your brain and google or buy a book. When I had to learn to do this eon's ago, I had to buy a book and read a whole bunch.

:) Can't spoon feed everything to you. I was simply showing you that your age truck DOES NOT require a digital solution.

Man you guys are welcoming, again its a forum so im allowed to ask questions. This method of mining for information is generally something you try after Google has been exhausted. The more you refer me to google, the more i wonder what knowledge, if any, you guys have to offer. And dude if your at work, get off the computer?? Let us be civil here gentlemen, if you have no advice-shut up!

Lookit, guys, he exhausted Google trying to find out where his diag port is. It's too bad nobody has ever asked that question before, or somewhere on the World Wide Web there'd be a record of it! And it's too bad there's not a sticky at the top of the forum with a link to the factory service manual. That'd be quite helpful too.

Your kidding right? I am hoping that you are, because that is an incredibly **** thing to say.

At work, get off the computer. Man, I work on the hill and my job is writing and researching ALL day.

I spoon fed you MORE than enough information. I posted a f'ing website that GIVES YOUR every step you need to take.

I don't know how old you are or what you deal is, but usually it is considered bad taste to attack someone who was honestly helping. I was honest and told you that while I did not, at that moment, have time to further spoon feed you information but that you could readily utilize this marvelous thing called a "search engine", I believe the verb being "to google" and that you would NO DOUBT run across a literal plethora of information on the subject.

I didn't know you needed me to drive to your house, open your hood and do it for you. I would be more than happy to oblige you, but to be clear, it isn't my job to read your mind.



And no offense.. but if you spent even a 1/10th the amount of time "googling" the subject that I did (I spent about 1 minutes) and you didn't find anything, then man; that is on you. Don't use your inability to utilize the inter webs and make that my fault.

I tried to help, hell, I did help. I handed you the directions.
