So the cel came on in my 1999. How do I go about checking it. I searched and couldn't find anything. And unfortunately since California sucks AutoZone can't scan it because its against the law. Is it the same as the earlier model Toyotas (I have a 93 pu) and you jump the te1 & e1 terminals and count the blinks. Thanks.

No such luck. You need an OBDII code reader. Amazon and newegg have some really cheap ones. Way worth it. Works on all cars since '96.

Is there a specific one to get or do they all work the same?

you could grab an ultra gauge or a scan gauge. Google them. They will give obd2 codes and more.
