I had the check engine and traction disabled lights flashing on the dash for the last week and wanted to test if the traction control was in fact disabled. So last night in a snow storm I set about performing donuts in a large parking lot. Sure enough I was drifting massively sideways with no beeping, no traction control engagement whatsoever.
Today I ran the codes and it was a loose fuel cap.
Toyota should know it is an extremely hazardous design that the traction control is disabled when there is a minor fault in the system like a loose fuel cap.
BTW I used a Actron CP9125 to read the codes. There is a trick to remove the scanner after use.
To remove plug after getting codes - and it is a bit tricky - do not force it. You have to remove the fuse panel access door located above where the unit plug's in and carefully insert a small screwdriver between the wires to depress the male plug tab. While gently depressing tab give the cord and scanner female plug a yank and it will come off.
