I know some will hate on the glasspack and how loud it is but I have a few questions. 1. Is the back pressure to little? 2. Do you know if it will pass emissions? 3. Do you know of videos of what it sounds like.

I want to let you know, if I could straight pipe it and safety it I would totally do it.

i just installed one of these a few weeks ago. i love it. not sure about emssion. but i do have a video ive been meaning to post in my build thread.
its not as loud as you would think a glasspack would be. its only really loud at higher rpm.

glasspacks are shitty 60's technology. Look at spintech mufflers, even then its a light SUV not a musclecar, you will hare driving it in about a month when it starts giving you a headache.

mufflers have nothing to do with emmissions, it may not pass inspection if you have a db limit though.

That glass pack isn't as loud as I thought... Still pretty sick though! I agree that they are old technology but its just a legal way of straight piping your vehicle. And spenedwrds where can I get those Fender Flares
 
I was just looking as Mufflers yesterday.
From what I can tell a "Magnaflow" is really just a slightly better Glasspac.

You can decide what Tone/Drone/Loudness you can deal with by getting a larger size for quieter and visa versa.
I opted for a 24", not into loud or Highway drone.

If you want loud then get the 14", in between then 18"

Do you have a video of the 24? How much different is it than stock?
 
I used an 18" to replace the suitcase resonator on a '03 Passat I had. Stock muffler stayed on, but took off that 60 lb behemoth and got a great tone.
So these can be used as alternatives to other components besides mufflers -- any where you don't want straight pipe.
 
I had a cherrybomb vortex a while back. It lasted for 2 years before it rusted through. Perhaps that's the typical life of a aftermarket muffler. Since then, I tried a flowmasters 40 series and 40 series w/ delta flow. So far I like the flowmasters more. The sound that it outputs is "nicer" than the flow-thru design of the vortex.
 
Welp got to the muffler place and the Boi had a 18" Magnaflow that he ordered instead of the 24" (12286) that I wanted, then after talking to his supplier for about 10 minutes said he couldn't get the 12286 until probably Tuesday and I am leaving at like 5am Tuesday morning on this long trip.

So I whipped out my trusty Samsung Galaxy S3 right there in front of him, went to Amazon, and in less than 1 minute later had a Magnaflow 12286 ordered with 1 day shipping.
It will also cost me $65 less than the 18" he had ordered for me.

I told him he should drop his supplier and buy it from Amazon, LOL.

So now wont be installed until Saturday unless it comes in early tomorrow.

I sure hope this Magnaflow 12286, 24" isn't going to be too loud or droney.
I don't mind it being a bit more throaty when I get on the gas but don't want it to sound like a garbage truck when I am on the highway.
 
Yeah I know, but honestly you can take your pick of any muffler made and get online and see at least 10+% of people saying the exact same thing about ANY other brand.

It is just a toss up, hardly makes any difference which brand you buy you can get a POS from Borla, Flowmaster, you name it.
You just happened to have gotten screwed by Magnaflow.

Yet I can read 100 reviews on Magnaflow and see 90 of them say its the best muffler they ever had.
Same goes for all the rest.

I will just have to hope I am not in that 10% screw pile.

The quality of their products has taken a dive. The thread explains that. 3 times in a row has to be one hell of a fluke. Take a look at your welds when you get it, they'll be small spot welds around the core of the muffler. Those used to be full welds around the entire core. I'm not the only one, either, I just made the biggest case out of it. From my experience, the 12286 specifically is a crap muffler for our trucks.

I'd also take into consideration the people who post reviews. They love it because it sounds good, they had it installed a few weeks ago and it makes their mustang sound rumbly. Not always credible people, and I'd like to think that I'm somewhat credible, despite our differences.

PS: I replaced mine with a glasspack, and for a while, it was a lot more satisfying. Certainly lasted longer.
 
COB take a look at this and see if the newer Magnaflow looks any different.
I looked inside and out and ALL the welds actually look really good to me.
The inside is a nice solid long weld.

I'd like to hear from you if that product looks any different.
It would be F-ing rediculous if they made the changes in their manufacturing process that were causing your issues. But still didn't acknowledge your right to a refund and explanation for the head ache they caused you.
Well if they are actually making a better product now, even though they seem to be shit heads with terrible customer service, I might just have to buy one for the price.

Hmmm, well glasspacks are loud as hell with no cats, the cats really take a lot of noise out. I tried running them in my 1uz hotrod and while it sounded really cool, it was so irritatingly loud I put a pair of spintechs after them.

I have had great success with a magnaflow on my 3rz powered race truck, its survived 4 seasons of excessive heat, jumping, bumping, rattling and rollovers. My buddy has one in his and last season it exploded apart.
 
Nunyabiz, can't you see the heat marks from the spot welds in your first picture? They're about 2-3" in from the edge of the pipe. The core is welded in from the other side of the pipe where the fiberglass packing is. The long weld you mentioned along the inside is only the seam of the pipe, which was originally a flat sheet of metal, then curved and sealed similar to HREW tubing (and unlike DOM). The exterior welds aren't the problem.

You've got a spot welded core exactly like I did. It looks identical.
 
Hmmm, I see about 3-4 spot welds on the bottom but that is just where it is held so they can do the finish weld along the outside.
The second picture shows the finish weld along the same spot.

So where exactly does this come apart at?

The 2 outside welds break?

I guess I will see what happens, maybe it has something to do with the outer box being supported and the inner pipe not enough.
I will see what the Muffler guy says, maybe he can weld 2 supports on the pipe close to muffler so that both inner pipe and outer shell is equally supported.


Edit: Well its in, total cost was $161.
The sound is a little more throaty than stock, just as quiet at idle but the more gas you give it the louder the difference is.
It does sorta drone just a wee bit on the highway.
What it sounds like to me is one of those old MGs or Triumph's.
Its not loud though and I definitely notice a bit more giddy up, now if I can just get an extra MPG.
