Cherry Bomb Glasspack

filled up with gas and got 14.22mpg.
Cant exactly say how much better that is because it wasn't my usual driving.
Usually I am 100% city.
This time I was about 90+% city and 10% highway, although also had probably 20+ miles of driving in AWD in pouring rain and have spent a lot of time goosing it all over checking the new Intake and the new muffler.
So I could have gotten at least 1mpg better minimum but this one tank is inconclusive but promising.
Usually on a 90+% city 10% highway I would expect probably between 13-13.5 mpg.

It definitely has more get up and go now though.
 
OK, so after taking it the shop today to get my oil change after the 8000 mile trip (burned maybe 2 tablespoons of oil)I had them check the muffler because of the rattling I have been hearing.

I have to say now that COB is 100% correct the muffler started rattling probably within 1000 miles of straight highway use.

It now, while at a stoplight sounds like a Leprechaun is under the truck shaking a coffee can with several pieces of gold in it.
I actually liked the sound and performance of the Magnaflow, but the rattling while sitting at stoplights has got to go.

I am going to try to get Magnaflow to just give me my money back and I am going to buy a Borla.
I am going to tell them if they refund my money I will get the muffler shop to order a new Magnaflow, then if they send me a shipping label to pay for the return I will return it.
Thinking about the 40665 Turbo XL.
Although it says:
" Borla Turbo XL mufflers are recommended for larger engines."
I can not imagine why.

Any advice on which Borla to buy?

Wow, I have to admit, that's some record speed! Mine didn't even fail that quickly. Sorry to hear that happened, and may you have good luck with your future muffler purchases.

I'm going to make a copy of this post in the Magnaflow thread, in hopes we can be the voices that prevent future purchases of their inferior products.

When you got your replacement mufflers how was that handled?
I mean obviously you can not go to the muffler shop cut it off, send it back, then wait to get a new one.
So they must send you one first and you send the old one back? or what?
and do you think they will do a refund?
Because honestly I do not want another one.

I will try to do so, mine only rattles though if it is "in gear" so I feel a bit leery about hoping out and screwing with it while in drive with brake on.
Will see if I can get the wife to help with it.

I ordered mine through Amazon. They sent me a new one first, and asked that I put the old one in the new box and UPS would pick it up at a certain time.

I've tried to get refunds from Magnaflow, but they keep using legal jargon about "Magnaflow does not sell directly to the public." They will not reimburse installations no matter how many you do, either. They also kept trying to tell me that it was improperly installed, even though the installer was one of their recommended installers. I had two of Magnaflow's own guys inspect the muffler and both agreed it failed on it's own.

At best, you can get a replacement muffler, but they'll make you go through the shop you purchased the muffler from. Or maybe the shop is willing to give you a refund or exchange for a different brand muffler.

Luckily, about my 3rd muffler failure, the Amazon customer service gentleman gave me a refund for the original price I paid, only because they couldn't believe Magnaflow wasn't doing anything about it. I was trying to pursue lost installation costs with Magnaflow which prompted the creation of the Magnaflow thread.

Thank you. If it was anything like mine, it will get much louder by the day. The initial break has occured - now it's tearing the rest apart inside. Perhaps you may find it necessary to make another video later on before they chop it off is what I'm saying... haha.

I got mine through Amazon also, although it says when I go to the refund page that the 30 day time has passed.
I guess I will just call them and see what happens.
So I guess it is not worth calling magnaflow then?

I don't see any reason why the OEM shouldn't last the lifetime of the vehicle. Unless it's rusted out or something.

I called Amazon customer service, they should do it under the manufacturer's warranty. One thing I love about Amazon - they put the customer first.

Magnaflow kept telling me to call the people I bought it from.

Yeah I just emailed them to get the ball rolling, Amazon is really good at customer service so I have a feeling they will make it right especially since the Borla I want I can get from them also.
I also Emailed Borla to see what they recommend muffler wise, I would like to try the 40665 Turbo XL unless there is some problem with it, though cant see why, its the same size of the Magnaflow, in fact I think a tad smaller.

Okay so I have had the glasspack on for a while now, I have done a tonne of driving but originally it sounded pretty good, had quite the drone though.

The I had to get a new cattialic converter and now it sound crazy awesome!

The crackle and grow it has is crazy, and its loud, almost as loud as my friends with the big v8 chevys!

So be careful when going with the glasspack, cause its loud.

Disclaimer: All the work do is by a Race/Drag car shop, so the glasspack is smaller and so is the cattialic converter so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

OK so Amazon as usual was great and no problems to deal with.
Sent me a pre paid return label for UPS for a full refund.

So I am about to order a 40665 Borla Turbo ProXS from Amazon that I will get Friday.

Anyone have any experience with this particular muffler?

I called Borla they said this muffler should work fine for a 3rd generation 4Runner, be rather quiet, good flow.
He said the XR-1 mufflers were actually meant for more HP and that the ProXS would be a better fit for flow/torque etc.
It is 19" X 4" X 9 1/2" case dimensions.
It is as far as I can tell the largest muffler that Borla makes with a 2.5" or less tubing size.

Glasspack on '99

Hey guys, I would appreciate some help. I believe my existing muffler has an offset and a diameter of 2.25". How would I install a glasspack with an offset? I'm looking into a Thrush.

Just installed a Cherry Bomb glasspack part#545-87087CB from Jegs. It is angled 9* and the length is perfect if you cut the original pipes off as close to the muffler as possible front and rear, you can use the stock tailpipe that way. A 2 1/2 inch O.D. connector will fit inside the muffler and over the front pipe and at the rear a 2 1/8 I.D. connector will fit inside the muffler outlet and also inside the tail pipe.

What it ended up being for this particular Magnaflow is they ignorantly weld two perforated pipes together which is also offset for the one that fits the 4Runner.
The weld that holds these two pipes together WILL break and rattle.

The Borla has a ONE piece pipe no welds, no design flaw, no problems.
