I hate to be devil's advocate, but Toyota's engineers have more work to do. The 4Runner has it's share of design issues, but more notable is my coworker's 2004 Camry XLE. Sometimes when he attempts to accelerate after a stop, the car just goes brain dead for a couple seconds and will hardly move. The local service people insist the problem happens on all similar Camry's and can't do anything to fix it. Clearly Toyota hasn't perfected all their computer control systems.

Having said that, would I put an aftermarket chip in my 4Runner? Probably not, but I would like to figure out why the actual performance of my 4Runner doesn't seem to match the hp/torque chart published by Toyota.

I've noticed the same thing on my 4Runner. There have been a couple of times where I've had to stomp the gas changing lanes on the highway, and there was a second or two that nothing seemed to happen. It was just long enough that a slight panic started to set in before the truck took off. I can't seem to duplicate it, but I know it was there. I thought it was me the first time it happened, but it's done it a couple times after that. I don't know if the electronic throttle control is intentionally delayed, or if it was waiting for the tranny to shift. It didn't feel like the tranny though.

That happened to me when I was on an interstate onramp and I wanted to avoid merging into a semi. I stomped on the gas and the transmision took almost two seconds to pick a gear and get going. There is no excuse for that!
 
I have had many vehicles that do this over the years. I am not sure of the cause, or why some don't, but I believe it is more common than not when you slam down the gas on an automatic transmission.
 
All of you with the 03-04 V8 should try test driving a 05-06 vvti v8. Much improve in acceleration response, i can tell you that much.:clap:

For $30, I am wondering if this is worth a try, especially with a money back guarantee (so they say). Does anyone have any experience with these?
 
Those things suck, they keep selling them under different names all the time.

The only chips that work are the ones that can be programmed to change your fuel and timing mappings for different conditions, normally priced at $600 or more.

The $30 ones are nothing but a little resistor in a box. It tries to cheat the ECU to make the mixture richer and thereby give a few more HP. At the cost of big MPG losses. In effect it messes up the ECU mappings as it messes with a sensor.

The expensive ones ($600) actually can be made to work, but is normally only really useful if the engine charactiristics are changed. Read changes in intake system (FIPK), headers, exhaust, camshaft, etc. This allows the tuner to change the OEM mapping to something more suited to a modified engine, experienced users only. This is normally done with testing on a chassis dyno for the particular vehicle.

SO bottomline dont waste your money on this $30 piece of $#!&.

Use the $30 to buy beers tonight and then tomorrow your 4R will feel a lot faster, cause you are slow :D
 
Before we get all excited about bashing this chip, has anyone actually verified what it is? If it replaces an OEM chip as a previous post suggested, then it may not be the simple A/F sensor resistor you guys think it is.

first off...dont ever buy software related items off Ebay...as most of the time they are rip offs unless they are for a honda civic or a ford mustang.

As for who to trust, coming from the tuning world for other cars, I have come to know names in industry to trust and this one listed above certainly does not fit.

If any of you have looked into software tuning for our trucks, you would know that because of the level of R&D required and the amount of persons that would be willing to use a program as such, the actual price of the software is actually quite high. Its about on par with those of my departed BMW ///M cars (about 900 bucks).

With the 2005 models, i do not know how long it will take companies to figure out the intricacies of the VVTI system and how that pertains to engine performance but im 100% sure that more power and increased drivability and MPG can be had from a chip, it really comes down to if there is enough demnad for such a program.

Ahh I see now. I didn't get anywhere with the posted links and I couldn't seem to find any info on this "chip". It doesn't appear to replace anything OEM, not like a drop in EPROM. You're right, looks like a loser...
