Diamond in the Rough

That's my boy! I called her "a diamond in the rough" last night. Luckily, looks like mostly lots of little parts. Not one dent on the skids, almost no rust (two quarter sized spots where no one sees), and straight. This will be my 3rd 4Runner project. I sure miss "Old Blue" (what the guys at work call my old 4Runner).

Thanks guys! The most important work is sway bar end links (I did one last night), shocks and springs, valve cover gaskets, headlights, taillights, and a battery tie down. I have a more complete list and will post it when I get on my desktop computer- I will also post some pics. I also need to degrease the engine, front diff, and transmission to see where oil is leaking from.

Chuckles busted his first knuckle last night. He's now part of the club! :lmao:

And he found out how hard it is to remove a single nut. I have never removed an 18 mm nut on Toyota until last night. I have a socket that size but no wrenches. I guess that will change soon. I'll let junior fill y'all in. But it is amazing what a sway bar end link does.

Broken driver's seat... the front left bolt was ripped out of the floor, so we drilled through to the bottom and put a regular grade 8 bolt in. It needs replacing badly

Needs a center console- I want to find one out of a '99+ to have cup holders

I have a couple of questions:
Will 4 spoke 15" alloys from late 1st gens, 2nd gens, and t100s fit on the 3rd gens? Also, has anyone rigged up some rubber mud flaps that say "4WD" from a 1st Gen 4Runner or a 4wd pickup for the front and rears in place of the SR5 flares and running boards?

4 spokes will only fit if your truck came with 15" wheels from the factory (the door jamb sticker is a damn liar, check your wheels.)

The 15" models came with smaller front brake calipers. The 16" wheel models (standard only on Limited, both base and SR5 can have 15") came with larger calipers (S13WM casting) that will not suit a 15" rim.

It should be noted that all 3rd gen 4Runners can be upgraded to the Tundra brakes, 231 or 199mm. Of the two 3rd gen 4Runners I have, both have 231mm Tundra brakes (13WL casting). For this you should run at least a 16" rim, although the original 4Runner 6 spokes will not work for this.

Mudflaps can be done, it's all screws after all.

Been working on it all weekend…

First was the battery tiedown. When I got it, it had a bungee cord and it broke, so I added some rope. Now it has a real one.

Also, at the junkyard, we got some leather headrests for the front seats

Some of the dumb things we have found are:
1. The clutch pedal could have fallen off at any time due to the pin holding it to the clutch pedal bracket was put on wrong and was missing a cotter pin
2. The slave cylinder was held on by mismatched bolts, which were loose
3. The front skidplate was held on by one bolt and two zip ties
4. Vacuum hose not connected on the VSV

I'm about to go and scrape off the 1/4" oil/ grease junk that is built up on the front of the truck under the engine. I'm also going to change the rear diff fluid today.

What are you using? remember to unbolt the fill plug before the drain plug. If you unbolt the drain then the fill won't come out then.... yeah. no bueno.

I did check the fill plug before doing it (thanks to nervo19's story of finding out that the fill plug was JB Welded after he drained it). I used Valvoline conventional 80W-90 GL-5. The old fluid was black, brown, and green.

Took off the fender flares. Just need to polish the paint and get some mud flaps. My dad cleaned off the nite shades with goof off!
