Started on the flares but stopped to get the CBI bumper on first and wait for the black hardware for the flares to come in the mail. Instructions for the rear bumper were pretty much non existent so a lot of trimming and test fitting were done for a perfect fit. Coming along nicely...

More to come...stay tuned.

In the meantime, someone saw my truck in a parking lot and gave me a legit offer of $65k to buy my truck. Hmm...

Well today marks the 1 Year anniversary to the day that I got my 4Runner

I'm not going to tell others how to do their builds, but your rear bumper is whack. I suspect you cut the stock bumper lower in the rear to avoid the gaps for aesthetic reasons. Problem is those gaps HAVE to be there. That bumper will really get moving up and down on the corners as the frame flexes, and those will impart their force on to the body panels without the gaps, and you'll end up with more trouble than it's worth.

That bottom of the tape line is where you are supposed to cut. I mean it likely won't be a problem if all you're doing is crawling malls...

...but the minute that hits a road anything less than smooth highway you'll understand the issue.

I also don't see the value in adding 200+ lbs of steel to the back without doing the tire carrier or ESPECIALLY beefing up the rear suspension/springs to handle that constant load. Maybe it's about appearances, but someone else on the forum did a rear CBI w/o carrier but it was because insurance paid for rear end damages in a traffic accident. Again I'm confused on this...

Issac, the rear bumper is not mounted yet. There is still trimming that has to be done. You can see its currently held up using jack stands. As I am sure you are aware, the instructions..or lack there of, doesn't exactly specify where to make the cuts. So we made sure to leave excess so that we can get a somewhat precise cut.

I chose not to do the tire carrier because I didn't want to have to open the swing arm every time I want to access the cargo area which I need access too constantly.

It's Isaac. Thanks.

The instructions actually do clearly specify where the cuts go, specifically following a distance from one panel line to the next. Follow them or you'll be unmounting the bumper to fix it.

I have to stop looking at this build! It makes me miss my 4Runner.

Good looking rig and nice build thread! Keep up the good work.

Very nice build. I'm still on the fence about the fender flares, but they look great contrasted against the red. I agree with you on the spare tire carrier. One of my good friends has a Tacoma that has ALL of the mods and one was the high clearance bumper from CBI. He actually removed the swing out due to problems when camping in tight wooded areas, also the overall length of the swing out was ridiculous. Several times the swing out created problems when we were selecting camping spots. We also did a bunch of bike trips...and after opening that damn swing out 1000 times, he knew it was time to remove it. I've also seen guys at ski resorts/trailheads (where parking is STUPID) who couldn't open their rear hatch because the person had parked too close to them. I can list at least 20 occasions when I've needed a reinforced bumper but no need for a spare tire carrier...for example trying to turn around on a dead end trail. If I had a rear bumper with spare tire carrier it would have (in some way) decreased the likelihood of me turning around, however if I had a solid rear bumper, I wouldn't have the scratches and scrapes from smashing my ass end into trees and rocks.

I'm 100% certain the owners of the vehicles below chose function over form!

I'm a little concerned the front right one won't play nice with the snorkel, but if I have to just paint my existing fender flares, or buy some OEM ones and get them coated in something that's more UV stable then I guess it's function over form.

^^^ i agree with jblick. If i ever replace my rear bumper, def going without a rear tire carrier. Too congested in LA to be swinging it out every time I need to get to the trunk.

You do know you can just slip a piece of steel tubing over the spindle when you don't want to use the tire carrier. Just saying.
