It's an optical illusion from the angle of the pic. Solid 3-4" of clearance between the terminals and the body. You could turn the battery around if you choose. I just like to keep mine towards the rear.

Finally got the rear camera installed and wired up. Went with the Clarion CC510. Got solid reviews and was easy to mount.
I followed this video here.
It also has part 2 for a complete install but I did not go with a rear view camera monitor as mine is going to be hooked up to my head unit.
Couple of notes:
You do not need to remove the 3 bolts holding the washer motor. Just remove the 5 nuts and then the cover will pop off. there are 2 push pins that pop out.
When drilling through the grommet be very careful that you do not hit the existing wires. I almost messed up on this one.
Snaking the wire down the rear window channel was tough. Be patient and make sure you go as far left as possible. Also follow the existing cable routing, its not easy but it is doable. Running the wiring through the grommet is the best way to keep it neat and clean.
I did not drill my rear hatch molding. I just snaked the wire around the corner where the license plate illumination lights are. much easier and no holes.
The 3M double sided tape has worked well. The camera is so light i dont think you need to drill in and nut and bolt the mounting bracket.

attached are the photos of the rear hatch camera install. I had previously run the camera wiring down to door sill chases into the rear opening by the jack. The CC510 is nice in that the camera plugs into the harness so it was pretty easy to leave the main harness there and then install the camera later.
