so on my 91 3.0 4runner I just got the heads back from the machnine shop and need to clean the block deck and make sure its square and looking for some advice.

I plan on using a scraper to clean off all the gasket material and then I want to sand the deck.

wondering what grit sand paper should I use?

also when checking the deck with a straight edge do I use feeler gauges to check clearance? what size feeler gauge? and where on the deck should I be checking?

anything these block are prone too I should be looking out for?

thanks

A Factory Service Manual or any Chiltons or Haynes will have the procedure for checking the block for square. There's a couple different places you'll need to check. Just a straightedge and a set of feeler gauges is all you should need for that.

When I cleaned mine I went after it with a sponge sander I had, 200 grit I think. It worked well.

Be careful when sanding the deck. Some head gaskets require the deck to be 100% smooth while others need a rough surface.
