Climate Control bulbs - 99 SR5

Hey guys, so my center console lights are almost completely out, and so I want to replace them with LEDs. My question is about the bulbs, specifically for my climate settings, and it is this - why do the bulbs I bought at Walmart (Sylvania 74LL) not work when this says that they should work?

Now I went to toyota and bought the correct bulbs (90981-11018), and when I compared them, the bulbs that I bought at Walmart were taller, and wider, and the base was so large that I think I might have broken some of the glass base trying to put it into the slot.

Now before I buy LED #74's I want to make sure that I get ones that aren't too big for the slot, do we know which #74's will work? Or should they still be the same?

Replacement Bulbs

Recently, I replaced the glove box, ash tray and climate control (aka heater/ac controls) bulbs in my 98 4Runner. I purchased #74 bulbs because everything I read said to use them for those particular applications. I found the #74 bulbs were too big. The base didn't want to fully insert into the socket and I didn't want to force them, because I didn't want to break the bulb or the socket. I took them back and purchased the #2721 bulbs that fit perfectly. I removed the green bulb covers from the old climate control ones and placed them on the new bulbs and they fit like a glove. I am using conventional bulbs in mine, not the LEDs. I know this sounds strange, but it seems as if the #74 bulbs have gotten bigger in size over the years. The #2721 bulbs are the same shape in a smaller size. Hope this helps you.

Ok, so that's basically the same thing I ran into. I agree, it looks like the bulbs have gotten bigger. So I guess what I'll do is probably end up ordering #2721 LEDs. So thank you, very helpful.

#2721? Is there a number equivalent to that from like AutoZone? I am not seeing that number bulb online and I need both bulbs for my climate controls.

2721 is the literal name of the bulb. If you look up "2721 bulb" on Amazon you can see a whole bunch of examples. In my experience though the #74 LEDs fit just fine, and you can get more of them for less than the 2721s cost.
