Climate control mind of its own

Hey guys! First of all I'm stoked with my new 04 4runner SRt 4WD, and have already had to follow the zero point calibration procedure. Anyway my problem. My T4R does this thing when I click auto for the climate control, it will default the air to the feet, and not allow me to choose both, or even top. And if I do, it disables the auto climate control. And if I red enable auto, it'll put the air back to the floor. What's weirmy d is that this is random, and then it'll be normal by allowing me to click auto, then my pr eference for top floor orboth. So my question is, is there something I'm missing as to this being normal perhaps it already being the temp I'm asking in a certain area already? Or is this something wrong someone else has seen or experienced. Thanks again

That is how the climate control works... I've messed with it before, but to no avail. If you hit the auto button, then the climate control will default to the feet, and if you change where the air is going to auto will turn off. all of the other setting will stay the same, so usually I just hit auto, then change where the air is going to. If you want to change from the auto settings, you will just have to do it manually... sorry to say. Good Luck

Not sure where you (OP) live, but I think what you are describing is actually pretty normal. Someone else here who has the technical details can explain it better, but a lot has to do with the temperature sensor in the passenger compartment. If it is cold the system will automatically direct the air to the floor (since warm air rises). As the vehicle warms up inside, the system will automatically direct less air to the floor and more air to the outboard dash vents.

If you aren't satisfied that the system is doing as you want, you can always override it by choosing a different fan speed or air direction. I live in Minnesota and, so far at least, I've learned to accept the automatic system as is. About the only time I need to override it is when I need to turn on the defroster when the windows begin to fog up on the inside, or when the windshield freezes up on the outside as it did today.

Thank you guys for the help. I figured it was more technical and that it was sensing the temps both floor and top and that's why it was doing that plus it makes sense. Nice one Toyota ;-)
