Clunk sound in 4wd. HELP!

I have an 86 toyota pickup. I just replaced the locking hubs as well as the differential fluid. When I have the truck in 4wd and get up to about 5-10 mph and up (havent gotten past about 15mph) there is a periodic clunk noise coming from the front passenger side. Each rotation it makes the noise, and obviously the faster i go, the faster the clunks occur.

Any help would be great!!

I have an 85 Land Cruiser 4wd that was doing the same thing as you stated..
The problem was the front drive-shaft u-joint (Close to the diff) was shot and had excessive amount of play in it. Hence the clunk clunk noise.

would that still be the case even though it is coming from the the front passenger side, its not directly in the middle where the diff is?

Sounds like the CV Joint boot could have ripped and the grease could be gone. That would also give a nice speed-responsive clunk, and would only be noticeable when in 4WD.

yep. could sound like it comes from the passenger side even tho its the ujoint.

but I fully agree with [MENTION=83023]THatfield[/MENTION] it could also be your passenger CV.

I checked the boots and there were no tears. And no sign of loss of grease. I'll try to inspect that a little more though, thank you

fixed the problem! the locking hubs the previous owner gave me to install (mile marker) weren't working right. the center bolt, when tightened, was not letting the axle spin. not exactly sure how it made a clunk sound. but, I did some work to the old Aisin ones, put those back on, and now I'm good to go.
