Clunk!

So I got my 2008 4WD SR5 a couple of months ago and am wanting to make sure that everything is in tip top shape to keep this thing goin for years and years. Anyways, ever since I bought it I have noticed a clunk or bang noise when shifting into reverse and out of reverse into drive. I thought since the vehicle was new to me that this was normal so I have just lived with it. Now I am getting more and more curious every time I hear it if it is "normal" or if there is something wrong. It is especially noticeable when backing into a spot in the parking garage at work. It sounds like it is coming from just behind the front axle toward the left side (might sound like the left because thats where I am closest to). Is this "normal" or should this not be happening?

No it's not normal, with it being somewhat new still, it shouldn't be making clunk or bang noises yet.

Make sure you keep up with greasing your u-joints and drive line timed with oil changes,
Some prior owners won't do the drive line, pump grease into the yoke assembly until it starts to move and then not so much on a regular basis.

your brake pads can start making noises also at half worn down point also. They start getting a little play to shift back and forth.

jack your truck up with tires still on the ground with a little weight on them with jack stands and turn your tires back and forth, check components visually and by grab, maybe with front fully off ground. Check again visually for unusual wear or contacts on different areas and connection points.

Think of the motions when it is making noise to try to eliminate/isolate the noise, you would be surprised what can/will make these noises.
