clunking/rattle noise 05 sr5 4wd

driving me crazy. actually had it at toyota dealership for a new trans last summer and they could not find the issue? when hitting bumps it makes a loose heavy rattle like something is loose. suspension was looked over and struts and was told all looks good. ball joints look ok. its hard to tell when making the noise where it is coming from ? it has been getting louder as of late thinking maybe like a motor mount maybe? anyone have a clue as to what it might be?

i really need some insight on this? mechanic had it up on lift but nothing is standing out as to what it may be?

Is your spare tire tight? Why was your transmission replaced?

Did you rule out the known 4th generation clunk issue with the driveshaft? If not I would recommend greasing your zerks and slip yolks

lower A arm bushings may be worn and even torn, all of mine are on both of my trucks...get a flash light and check the rubber inside the mount, you should be able to see without taking tire off.

I had this issue and after reading lots of rattle noise threads one guy suggested to check the roof rack's cross bars. There are 2 #10 torques screws per side on the bottom of those cross bars. I stood on the step rail and hit the bars with my fist and sure enough they made the rattling noise that I have been hearing. The first screw I went to check was finger loose, and continued onto each and every one of them (8 total).


My noise would be really bad on windy days too.

Hope that is your problem because it was really easy to fix!

I, too, had the same problem with my crossbars. The "noise" started out as a low hum then over time turned into a loud rattle. This went on for over a year and most of the time I could never tell where the rattle was coming from. I was able to purchase the proper tool to fix for approx. $10 at Advanced Auto Parts. I hope this information helps someone else's sanity from the noise.

Mine are my sway bar end links in the front. I damaged them putting in my lift and the clank got worse. They still work and I'm not to worried about it. I'll replace them when it gets warmer...

Make sure the bolts on the skid plate are tight.

Mine weren't and it ratted and it drove me crazy. Tightened them up a said good bye to the rattle.
