Clutch Cancel Switch

For some reason sometimes I can start my 99 4Runner by depressing the clutch and other times I have to press the clutch cancel switch. More times I end up having to hit the clutch cancel switch to start my car. Sometimes it will start by depressing the clutch or depressing the clutch with the car in 1st gear and it'll start. But a majority of the time I have to press the clutch cancel switch to start it..Is there any reason for this? I have a 99 4Runner 5speed V6 with a 163k

When you depress the clutch pedal to the floor, the pedal contacts a switch that in turn let's you start the truck. The Clutch Cancel switch bypasses the need to hit this switch. So there might be something up with the clutch pedal switch. Get under there and see if there is anything noticeable. On my truck I have to depress the clutch ALL the way to the floor, or else she won't start.

What's funny is that I was able to depress the clutch after the truck sat for 10hrs while I was at work and it started....then I stopped to get some food after work and shut the truck off...than I depressed the clutch all the way when I went to start my truck and nothing happened so I had to use the clutch cancel....It works when it wants too at the moment I suppose I have to look under the truck and see if anything is out of the ordinary

Mine was funky like that. Then when I replaced the carpet it would never work at all. I solved the problem by putting a self-stick furniture bumper (at any hardware store) on the metal flap part of the clutch pedal that actuates the pedal switch. Easy, fast, cheap fix...my favorite kind. There is a pic (not mine) if you search hard enough.

He used a generic electronic chassis foot (the round clearish plastic piece) but my bumper works just as well.

What Durk shows in the picture is good. I recently rebuilt the entire clutch pedal assembly and used the black factory bumper but I found that it made sense in my case to also slightly bend the brackets that hold that bumper and the switch so that it had a straight on engagement with the switch plunger. From the dealer the brackets were angled such that it was putting a side load on the plunger that looked like it could damage the switch over time. I did a writeup on it that you can find in my profile if interested.

Also give the white button on the switch like 1/4 turn. When I tore mine apart, the contacts had worn two distinct grooves in the drum. So if you give it half or quarter turn it will Take it out of the grooves and onto fresh copper.

would you consider disabling it?

mine is disabled, or non-existent on my 85. I love it. its great off road if I need to start it in gear. i have never liked clutch switches.
