clutch play

2000 5speed. When I go over bumps, or brake hard the clutch pedal shakes and rattles. There is about a half inch of free play in the pedal. How can I get this out?

have you checked the mount bolts?

also, you want there to be free play, up and down atleast. otherwise, your clutch wont be fully engaging, and will cause it to slip. not good.

is there a spring on the pedal? sometimes that can help with it moving around.

but, id check the condition of the mount bolt, and bushings if its got any.

Thats for a Tacoma but the 4Runner will be pretty much the same if not exact.

So it has the correct amount of freeplay. Is the freeplay supposed to rattle in and out over every bump. It gets very loud.

It shouldn't rattle, but not having a manual trans 4Runner, I'm not really sure what they use to keep it from rattling. Usually a spring of some sort is there to keep the pedal lightly pulled/pushed in the up most position. You may also look for a missing bushing of some sort that would keep it from rattling around.
