well, if you want all radio frequencies covered in case of emergencies in remote areas, having a CB radio, Ham radio, Sat phone,and Cell phone in your 4runner is sure to give you much higher chances of getting hold of someone to help you.

Ham radio license is very easy to get - just buy a book reviewer for for the license exam.

If I had money, I would rather get a satellite phone such as iridium or globalstar as a back-up to cell phones . If the cellphone towers get flattened by natural disaster, you can still talk via sat phone.

That's a nice radio but where the hell are you going to mount that beast?

The Cobra 75 most of us are running is much less obtrusive and has the same features, for the most part.

Yeah, I took a two day crash course for $5 and got the basic with honours license (lets you use HF) so it's pretty simple. Most people around here are going that route instead of CB, partially because our distracted driving laws forbid CB use but allow VHF/UHF use while driving. No clue why that is.

I was thinking the same thing about mounting it...

I thought for a second I had linked a HAM radio.

I am planning on getting a Ham cert at some point in my life.
Not for truck purpose, more for home use. I heard you can get people in other countries, that's pretty cool!
 
yes, with a ham High frequency(HF) radio you can talk overseas. the ham walkie talkies ---> those are called UHF and VHF radios, and the nice thing is that the new exams dont need morse code anymore ,basically the exam reviewer is just all theory for which you dont need any radio background whatsoever . all the concepts to learn are in the reviewer. its basically the same as taking the DMV written exam -the govt(FCC's) intent is just so you know 'the rules'.....As for the actual operation of the radio ---> its all in the radio user manual and just join the internet discussion forums for local ham radio clubs for more questions. either one of the 2 books below is pretty much all you need for the exam:

I still have my 'old' ham radios although I let my license expire as i found internet more interesting -although with the latest ham radios , you can use them to surf the internet or use it like a cellphone so I might get back into it in the future -check out Icom dstar series D-STAR General Information - Features - Icom America
