COB's '89 Supra Turbo

what i missed a chance to get my dream car!

I never realized how far La Quinta is from me. While I was buying the car, the previous owner's neighbor rolled up. The look of disappointment on his face was almost painful to look at. Apparently he'd been trying to get hold of the car for years.

Thank you craigslist...

Pulled the hood off the roof, where it's been for months. The targa top had been molested in the recent past (I'M SORRY TOP, I DIDN'T MEAN TO) and is going back to it's old self...

:D

Bought this targa, complete with headliner and trims. The off color headliner was a terrible reminder - improper shades everywhere :(
22077762529_dae126c9aa_b.jpg

Switched EVERYTHING over. The headliner, the trims, the seals (still have new ones in the package, too), even the covers for the rear mounts.

Looks so much better with the trim back in place...

Motor's still in the same spot, the trans is underway and pics will be up soon :D

Rolled the car outside, put it up on stands

Some of the gear teeth are rounded, the slider/sleeve teeth are rounded as well. New sliders and a few other parts have been ordered and reassembly will begin.

Some good time was spent backtracking and fixing mistakes, there are quite a lot of little items to keep track of. Sucker's all done though :D

The 3rd gear would have been ideal to replace, unfortunately discontinued. The teeth have been sanded a bit for a sharper edge. The two sleeves I needed were in stock.

Pulled tank to discover a rusty corroded mess... drained 10 gallons of putrid rotten fuel, estimated 10 years old. I got to thinking of ideas for cleanup and attempted to use apple cider vinegar.

The vinegar was not working up to my hopes, and it was difficult to reach nooks and crannies inside the tank with the pressure washer. Instead opted to find a used tank. This is how it looked upon first inspection... little cleaning required!

Vacuum lines all done, radiator installed. Found a new alternator also, the old one was a rebuilt unit, this one happened to be a brand new unit. It was installed on an 89 Supra with 7M-GE that happened to come into the local junkyard. I also got a stock manual shifter from the car.

Wow! I'm just amazed at how great this car is becoming!

Do you know if that oil cap will fit a 3.4? I want mine for my 4Runner :)

On a side note, I got to sit in a Supra for the first time a few weeks ago! It was an '85 at the junkyard and it did live up to having the most comfortable Toyota seats ever made haha. I loved how everything inside was laid out perfectly, I'm sure your Mark III is similar.

Cob, nice work man. Are you following any tutorials on rebuilding the tranny, or all just from past experience?

Thanks buddy :)

I haven't tried the cap on a 3.4, but I highly doubt it wouldn't fit. The thread on type Toyota caps are pretty much interchangeable.

Never sat in a MKII, but I wouldnt doubt if it's more comfortable than the MKIII. The MKIV seats kind of suck. MKIII seats are comfy enough to pass out.

I have only once rebuilt a transmission before this one, it was a subaru transaxle for a class in college. My friend John, who owns the shop, has rebuilt quite a few R series transmissions during his 25+ years in business. Most people would just drop off their stuff and let their mechanic do their work. I do the work with my own hands and learn instead of just paying someone else to do it. It's priceless knowledge, no one just tells you this stuff.

This really helps me because I do not have a huge cash flow to piss away like some people do. I have to earn the money through parting vehicles, my paychecks are simply not sufficient for 4 project cars. Transmission/engine rebuild labor is far too costly for me to afford. Doing the work myself means I can have 4 projects and not go broke.

This trans was easier than the subaru transaxle because it didn't include the diff (YAY RWD). The process required a printout of the shafts, essentially it was the same as everything was installed, but in reverse order. When everything is on shafts and comes out in one certain way, it is pretty straight forward and easy to figure out. I used a bolt organizer to keep everything small in order. I always photograph steps to help with reassembly.

There are little details that were easy to overlook, like the length of the detents for the sychro hubs. 3 different sets and two look almost identical, except ones a little shorter. It is far easier to rebuild an R series trans than a whole 7M-GTE!

Wow dude. This thing is coming along pretty sweet. Next time I'm in OC I'd love to get a chance to check it out.

Hit me up when you'll be coming through the area. The weekdays are best, FYI though, school is starting back up in a week. Have you considered visiting KOH this year? I scheduled the days off a few months in advance, you could come meet up with us (driffter33, brian2sun, TRDteen might come). Great wheeling over there, if you haven't been!

The beech performance shifter went houdini on me, I can't find it. In the meantime, I was able to get a stock shifter from the same 89 that donated its alternator. Also installed a new rubber boot around the base of the shifter.
23594095214_0a23873dce_b.jpg

New boot isn't as snazzy as an OEM one, but it looks pretty good. Still looking for the right shift knob... I'd love the stock shifter knob in new condition.

Man I love this so hard. Great job. We had an '85 Celica GT-S with a 22R motor. Always wished that motor would blow, so my brother and I could put a Supra motor in it. However, that 22R was indestructible. haha. Subscribed!

This is an incredible write up and awesome job on the build. You are exactly the type of person I would buy a car from. I just read through the entire thread. Very good job. I do love the wheels you're going with too. Good choice !

You could have the Supra shift knob reupholstered in whatever color of leather you want for $80. It would look sweet!

Good thing buying a brand new one was about the same price, the center gear diagram on the old one is pretty fudged. Japan sourced parts FTW.

Great work. Keep it up. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks amalik.

Thanks! For once, you try to get it to blow, and it just won't! Enough of my personal problems though... the 22R is a really stout little thing. I take it that you sold it with 22R still chugging?

Thank you! There were a few learning experiences (no cheaping out on bodywork), but it's coming out great so far! OEM wheels ftw.
