Code 52 questions.

Hi Since the day I bought my runner the check engine light has been on. It is throwing a code 52 and Im pretty sure that's the knock sensor. I tried to get one from Toyota and they told me that they don't make the part anymore.I went to oriellys and auto zone to see if they had the part and they do I just was not sure what brand to get. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on the brand of the sensor I should get??

definitely get the Toyota OEM one. I would also get the OEM pigtail to replace while you're under there, as it could be what has failed. In fact, I think the pigtail is more apt to fail rather than the actual sensor itself.

It could also be the sending wire that goes to the ECM in the cab, which can sometimes crack and short with age, as well as the connections between any one of these items as listed.

This topic has been covered extensively and there are tons of write-ups about this under the search option here, as well as on yotatech.com. Try "code 52, knock sensor replacement" etc.

To answer your question, OEM for these parts exclusively. I am surprised your dealer sent you away. There are some Toyota parts warehouses online that should stock these parts. Good luck.
 
I had the same code as you before I sold mine. it does get very exspensive if you want a shop to do it for you but if you can do it yourself its way cheaper. definitely get OEM though. If you get a cheapbay one I can garuntee you that you'll have to replace it in the next 4 years. And replace the pigtail when your doing it as well. Its just another 15$. Usually its the pigtail that throws the code. Good luck!
 
Do not go the cheapie route.

I did and I kept fighting the issue.

I found an OEM KS on ebay for $60 bucks. I also replaced the pigtail too. I also re-ran a shielded wire all the way back to the ECU. I found the right Toyota connector, crimped, soldered, and covered with the right boot. Its arguably better than OEM. At the other end, I cut the old ECU wire off and soldered on my new one. Grounded it on the ECU mount.

This is the last thing I'm going to try before I tear it down and replace the knock sensor itself. I grounded my new cable back into the factory splice. I've heard of the ECU ground approach. My code is intermittent. It usually only trips when I accelerate slowly. If I accelerate with a little more purpose, the CEL doesn't tend to come on.

That sounds like the opposite of mine. If I 'snuck' up on it it wouldnt come on, but aggressively/regularly accelerating would trip it.

Uh yeah. The timing isn't retarded and the ECU actually controls the engine versus running it in the 'safety' mode. You get garbage MPG and power with it running that way.

Dude thank you for telling me that I was wondering my im getting like 13MPG and everyone else seems to get on average 15MPG I also have to do my timing belt soon also. So I think im going to do them the same time and do one big job. What brand would you go with I don't have $260 for a OEM one from Toyota are there any other brands that are just as reliable. I ordered a pigtail to ill do both parts.

alright so I bought the knock sensor, piggy tail, and intake gaskets. I think im ready to do the knock sensor. Does anyone have a forum to follow. The search bar at the top wont work for my computer or phone. anything would help. I have a rough understanding on what I need to do just don't want to miss anything. Thank you
 
Its like a two day process... Im not mechanically inclined and man this is hard. I should of just paid Toyota to do it. I took everything apart and figured id finish today but I have no clue on which bolts goes where. I wish someone had a video on the process. Also whenever I took out the injectors one of them was broken on the tip. and there was a couple of sensors that were broke when I was trying to get them off. all in all should of had a mechanic do it.(Good thing I have a spare 4runner)
 
So I am looking under the timing cover and I noticed that the idler bearing on the top spins freely. I was wondering if its supposed to do that or is it suppose to have tension on it from the belt. Could my timing belt be stretched???
