Code P1121 is an expensive fix!!

The other day my 02 4x4 Runner just lost power while cruising down the interstate. Luckily i had my handy OBDII scanner with me and it shower the P1121 code. I cleared the code and it ran fine for a few miles until the CEL came on again and the truck had NO power.
In reading several threads here the only way to cure this problem is to buy a new or salvaged throttle body. This is because Toyota in all their wisdom, chose NOT to make the 4wire Accelerator Pedal Position Senor(APPS) or the 4wire Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) available as replacement parts. They MUST be purchased with the throttle body!!

My question is: When I replace my throttle body with a new or used throttle body will I have to adjust the APPS and the TPS on the replacement part?

I've found a salvaged Throttle body for $325 and the new throttle body from Toyota for $815

I am no expert on the TBW system, but I remember reading that the reason those parts can't be replaced is because they are precisely adjusted at the factory. So, logically, it would seem you would not need to adjust them and, in fact, should not try.

What did you end up doing here? I am in the same boat with a P1120 & p1121 code.

My 2001 did the same thing a couple years back. I saw how much it was going to be to replace the whole TB with a new one so I took a chance and bought a used one for about $300. Took maybe 15 min to replace it and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I just replaced the throttle body with a used one on my '01 4runner. It started right up but the RPMS are a bit high and is throwing a code P0121. What could be the problem??

I'm not 100% sure but it could be as simple as having the throttle cable too tight. There should be a little amount of slack when pressing it with your finger.

Update... I just took it for a drive (I cleared the code before driving out). The 'Runner works fine, no codes, just the high RPMs (up to 1000 in P and N only). How can I adjust the cable? Actually, the cable feels loose...

Check for vacuum leaks.

I have an '01 and taken my TB apart, as well as went to the salvage yard at a moments notice to grab a spare just in case...

If its the TPS (throttle position sensor) - this can be a cheaper but temperamental fix.

Not sure if you have taken the TB off, but the TPS screws are paint marked from the factory.

If the sensor is fouled - you can get a replacement. Ours (2001 & 2002) is the 4-Pin TPS.

I had a wonky idle (spiking up to 2k and then back down repeatedly) and this was fixed with the TPS replacement. However, I say temperamental because the sensors position is key. If its off just a little, it can cause idle issues which is likely why the factory paint marked them - as well as forced a full TB replacement (including the TPS) if there are TB issues.

I replaced the TB for a used one. When I started the engine after installing the used one, the 'runner had high idling but, this morning I disconnected the battery for a couple of hours and that fixed the problem.
