Code po441 and runs really rough after fill up.

1st off I have never had any issues with my 2003 4runner Sport. It has the 6 cylinder engine. So I apoligize for my first post asking questions. I have had this vehicle since new. Never has had any issues
other than brakes, shocks, and normal maintenance items.
So I am getting a Code po441 evap system incorrect purge flow. I got the code once after filling up with gas and let the pump click off. I got the code immediately and the 4runner barely started and would not run unless I kept gas pressed to the floor. This lasted about 2-3 minutes and then went back to normal run.
After reading about this code I checked the vaccum lines around the engine and removed the vacum switching valve that was at the rear of the air filter. I put 12 volts on it and the solenoid switched on and off
with the voltage. So I put it back on.
I went ahead and bought and installed a toyota gas cap. Next fill up it did it again. Lasted 2-3 minutes and then will run normal.
I tested the theory that it was because the gas cap was off and not related to filling up. Removed gas cap, waited about 5-10 minutes. Reinstalled gas cap. Car started and ran normal.
To test if it because of just adding some gas, I started with a 1/4 tank, put 5 gal in and car started and ran normal.
Put 5 more gal in and car started and ran normal.
Filled to within 2 gal of full, car started and ran normal.
Filled all the way and let the pump click off. Had a very small stumble for 3-5 seconds and then ran normal.
I hope you guys can give me some direction.
I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Evap codes are a *****.
My guess is you have a bad solenoid/valve or a leak in a hose somewhere.
You may end up going to a shop with a smoke machine.
You can also do this at home if you're so inclined.
Google the both and you'll find tons of info on both.

thank you. kinda what i suspected. I guess this weekend will take the charcoal canister out and test the valves on it and test the vaccum lines with a vaccum pump. Was just wondering if there was an item that was a usual suspect. I will reply back with what i found.

Well found the problem. It was the vacuum switching valve on the charcoal canister. Did not click when voltage applied to it. When checking with meter it shows zero ohms. So the solenoid is shorted out. Looks like I have to buy a new/used canister. The vsv comes off but I cannot find a replacement vsv unless someone knows where to get one

Hey Guys,

Im a new member to the forum and am having major powerloss @ the engine. I'm not able to post a new thread, so im replying to this one to see if you can help. I took my 5th gen to the dealership (twice), and to a second mechanic and they haven't be able to nail down the issue. Currently the engine is operating at about 30% power, they checked clogged cats, mass air flow sensor, fuel pressure. They are thinking the knock sensor is causing the engine to pull timing, hence the lost of power. they did check the sensor and wiring harness and both have good continuity (i.e. no issues with them) They didn't identify any knock or issue with the engine, but are recommending disassembly of the engine for a inspection to see if there are any issues $$$. Does anyone have any recommendations of other things to check, or any applicable threads?

Check ETCS fuse in engine compartment fuse box. If that fuse is blown the truck will operate in limp mode with power loss similar to what you're experiencing.

Don't let them take apart the engine just yet.
