Hey guys haven't been on T4R for a bit but its good to be back!
I went to pick up my gf from work today then it happened. The air went from icy cold, to warm and slightly muggy.
The belts in the runner have been squeaking for a while now so I had a feeling as to what it was when I lifted the hood. And sure enough the belt snapped clean.
The worst part is one, or both of the other belts are chirping so I fear the others are worn and getting ready to pop too.
In my haste I went to AutoZone this afternoon and picked up some replacement belts for the A/C compressor, Power steering, and alternator.
I have heard bad things about Duralast. Hopefully their belts are decent quality, and hopefully these are the correct belts for the 2.7 4 cylinder. The truck currently has NAPA belts installed.
How hard of a job is this to do? I've never done it before so I hope I don't screw something up lol. But I feel confident in my ability to learn as I have done well in every other mechanical repair I have done up to this point.
The truck keeps throwing the P0420 code at me. I have read about how prevalent this problem is not only in the 4runner but the tacoma as well. I know the code is for an inefficient catalytic converter, but I don't understand how a truck with 122K miles could have a bad cat. I am leaning towards a faulty o2 sensor. What are your thoughts on this?
The clutch pedal is quite squeaky/creaky on this thing and I have always had to "nudge" the clutch pedal up with my foot to activate cruise control. I finally got sick and tired of it and looked up the linear spring mod which fixed the clutch pedal not returning to the button but the damn squeak is still there!
After further investigation I realized that the squeak can be heard from underneath the truck as well. The clutch was replaced about 5k miles ago for the previous owner by a mechanic. So i can only figure something underneath needs a bit of grease to make it quiet again I just don't know where exactly.
I've also noticed a strange vibration-like noise coming from somewhere behind the the dash/ac vents, but i only hear it when accelerating or decelerating at low rpm in 4th or 5th gear (It does have a 5 speed). It sounds like something is loose in there but once again, I have no idea what it could be.
My last problem is the brakes. They work fine, stop like a dream. but at about 1/4 of the pedal travel they make an annoying ass squeak/squeal but it goes away when I mash the pedal harder. I am thinking about taking the brakes apart to see if they are starting to wear down and that is causing the squeal. It sounds like the squeak is coming from the rear of the truck but I am not positive.
