Cold Air Intake -- 3VZE

.. i agree, if there are ppl who have found a way to get stock or better performance out of a 3.0 with the MAF absent then please do post, im very interested.. there is a possibility of putting a series of resistors and potentiometers.. but i'm sure hp loss and poor running/ engine codes are definite. i stand my ground currently that the 3.0 will not run with the MAF sensor removed.
 
If it would run without the maf it would just be in open loop mode which would cause it to run rich and kill gas mileage and power.
 
I have a K&N Filter on my 3.0 and it definetly helps when it comes to power. It also helped my mileage, after fiddling with my ignition timing a little bit I was able to squeeze 23 mpg in the summer out of my 4Runner, so I believe that the cold air intakes pay for themselves. Finally they are easy to maintain, I would definitly go for it.

I put a K&N filter in mine also, and felt instant increase in power and i am now getting an extra 50km's per tank of fuel.
 
are you kidding??? do you even know what the MAF does? it controls a flap in the air box. and if you have an open air filter(cold air intake) it doesnt need that sensor. Try taping the flap open in the air box, and unplug the sensor, i bet the truck will run just fine.

After some research i have found that it is the other way around. The flap actually controls the sensor. The sensor reads the flap's position (position which varies in respect to the amount of air flowing past/opening it) and sends the relevant data to the fuel management system, determining how much fuel to inject.

I have a 90 sr5 pick up 4x4 was wondering if theirs a way to replace the maf with a smaller one with out the case it's on
 
You take the whole stock air intake off, and put that one in replace of it. You dont need the MAF sensor if the intakes open. And cold air intakes increase the air coming into the engine. therefor no need for the MAF

A Mass Air Flow Sensor is used to find out the mass flowrate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine.


The air mass information is necessary for the engine control unit (ECU) to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine. Air changes its density as it expands and contracts with temperature and pressure. In automotive applications, air density varies with the ambient temperature, altitude and the use of forced induction, which means that mass flow sensors are more appropriate than volumetric flow sensors for determining the quantity of intake air in each cylinder. (See stoichiometry and ideal gas law.)

There are two common types of mass airflow sensors in use on automotive engines. These are the vane meter and the hot wire. Neither design employs technology that measures air mass directly. However, with additional sensors and inputs, an engine's ECU can determine the mass flowrate of intake air.

Both approaches are used almost exclusively on electronic fuel injection (EFI) engines. Both sensor designs output a 0.0–5.0 volt or a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal that is proportional to the air mass flow rate, and both sensors have an intake air temperature (IAT) sensor incorporated into their housings for most post OBDII vehicles. Vehicles prior to 1996 could have MAF without an IAT. An example is 1994 Infiniti Q45.

When a MAF sensor is used in conjunction with an oxygen sensor, the engine's air/fuel ratio can be controlled very accurately. The MAF sensor provides the open-loop controller predicted air flow information (the measured air flow) to the ECU, and the oxygen sensor provides closed-loop feedback in order to make minor corrections to the predicted air mass. My questions about these "cold air intakes" is more about filter maintenance - how do you clean/replace these easily? The stock air filter is stupid easy and cheap to change.

Regarding the "steel" pipe vs. plastic, I would think that with the heat under the hood, a metallic pipe will heat up faster than plastic (stock) and affect the air adversely. I don't run one of these but was looking at this one off Amazon, and yes it has a provision for a MAF sensor, though a bit aft of the stock location.

Regarding MAF sensors in general, like [MENTION=127975]Jixxer6[/MENTION] said, the ECU requires a reading of the incoming air density (humidity, etc) to adjust fuel trim and is absolutely required for an EFI equipped vehicle to operate properly, if at all. Like others have said, can't live without a MAF sensor in our 3G 4runners.

Paper filters are always going to be the easiest to maintain since you simply toss the old one and pop in the new. Reusable filters will require periodic cleaning and some require application of an oil once dry. Obviously it's going to take more time to clean, dry and then reapply oil. Whether this is worth it is really a personal choice. Another thing to consider is that you won;t be able to use your rig while your waiting for the filter to dry on an aftermarket CAI set up. With a drop-in (in an otherwise stock set up), you can always use a paper filter temporarily during this time. Personally, I would suggest buying a second filter element in a CAI set up so you can still use the vehicle while the other is being cleaned/dried.

Yes, I know, thread from the dead, but it popped on the Recent Bar, and I was wondering about these CAIs myself - personally I would always buy a second element regardless; coz anal.

Hopefully anyone else reading this in the future will be disabused of the idea that a MAF is not required. We hope Mr.P has found enlightenment in the interim.
 
people, we have AFM's. not MAF's. but either way, you do not want to remove either while putting in an intake, they still have to measure the amount of air coming in to tell the ecu how much fuel the engine needs.

I'm here to ask if anyone has done the battery,afm swap with the supra afm. is it worth it over getting just a cone filter? how hard are they to find?

I might be wrong, but I though the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor was the thing in the intake tube that measures air density after the air filter and the AFM (Air Fuel Meter) was correct name for the pre-cat O2 sensor on vehicles with CA Emissions.

I have been wrong several times today, just ask my coworkers, but I still want to know what the Supra batter, afm swap is :)

ps, I'm not trying to be a d*ck, it comes quite naturally to me
 
they are two different meters or sensors that measure the amount of air entering the engine. the difference is the way each calculate the volume of air. google afm vs maf for the specifics.

as for why the supra afm is desired, its because it is .5? inches larger. which means, more air, more fuel, more power. my question is is the cost, trouble and time f the retrofit worth the power gain? and if so what is the gain?
 
One thing these $45 dollar ebay intake kits are good for for us 1st gen guys is a cheap, solid and leak free solution to aging and cracking factory intake plumbing. Whether you use the open filter or utilize the closed oem box.
