Check out mittens (if they had a less sissy reputation more people would wear them!)

On really cold days I wear thin cloth gloves and thinsulate lined mittens and my hands stay warm. Not great for manipulating anything but great for snow removal, driving, snowmobiling, etc.

There's a lot out there with "pockets" giving finger access for all fingers, trigger finger, etc. but keep in mind they should not be tight as already mentioned.

I'll do some research. Supposedly the Montana gloves are top notch but it seems TNF stuff is a bit overrated.

Are you talking about the North Face Montana mittens/gloves? I've never had great luck with their stuff, but that might just be me.

I used to try different kinds of liners for an extra insulating layer, but after trying a few different materials and fits, I realized that when I went no liners, my hands were actually warmer when I just wore a single larger mitten or glove.

I've come to prefer leather for winter gloves and boots whenever possible because it is easily waterproofed with boot oil, and it is way more durable than any of the synthetic materials I've tried. Believe it or not, these are by far the warmest mittens I have ever worn:

they were a white elephant christmas gift, and I have over a hundred days in them so far, down to -20F with no complaints. They were maybe $25 from the hardware store, with a fluffy Thinsulate lining and a fairly loose fit.

for a little more dexterity, you could go with the glove version. but like the others said, its tough to have dexterity and warmth, especially where your hands are concerned, but I was blown away by how warm and dry these simple winter work gloves are. and for 20 bucks, its a pretty cheap experiment.

I love those carhartt jackets, I have 3 of them and they are bombproof and really warm. Add another midlayer, and that could be a winning combo for outside work around 0F. (I typically wear a wicking baselayer, Patagonia micro puff hoody, and a technical shell, and usually end up keeping my gloves in my pockets until around 10-15F simply because my core is happy and that excess blood flow is enough to keep my hands warm.

In my opinion, the 3 best insulating materials are:
- Down
- PrimaLoft
- Thinsulate

Yeah North Face Montana... the material inside almost feels like it makes your fingers colder. I'll look for some mits and some leather insulated gloves. I imagine ski/racing gloves would be pretty good. I'll see what I can find.

I deal a lot with guests who come here to ski, and for some reason, all the brands popular with the guests have those awful liners that dont insulate at all, and if they get wet they pull out of the glove, inside out. Race gear isnt usually as warm as it looks, they're typically made to provide protection from race gates and to look fast. Hestra makes a solid glove, and Black Diamond just got into the apparel business with some interesting offerings. I have some Rome SDS leather gloves I'll wear occasionally, but all the above are gonna run you around $100+

3 finger gloves are an interesting option, too:

I've never seen anything in a $200 glove that would justify the cost. They all use the same type of insulating materials, so really all you get is the brand name. The biggest issue that I see people neglect is core warmth. Thats the single biggest cause of cold digits

After 2 MISERABLE sub 0 days on the railroad this week with weakly insulated work gloves on, I just got my mittens out. They're cumbersome, but theyre warm

sup guys?
Just found this thread, I just moved back home to Co from Houston in September. This will be my first winter back in 6 years. Last season I didn't ski a single day, first season since I was 3 years old. that called for a pretty serious revaluation of my life choices so I moved back haha. I work a 28 on 14 off in the gulf as an ROV pilot. This one is running a little long though an I haven't been home since October 28th. Looking forward to coming home to piles of snow and an open ski area! I live 5 minutes from purg and about 2 hrs from telluride.

Anyway MtnT4R is right it's all about core. Keep your core and your head warm and your hands and feet stay warmer easier. I like merino wool for this. It's the best material for socks and baselayers there is I think.
As far as baselayers, the ninja suit is amazing. They are kinda spendy but worth every penny. I rock one of these and a down jacket, no need for a midlayer and I'm good to a few below 0.

Mtnt4r we should make some turns dude. I plan to venture up towards summit this season for the first time. I have always stuck to my local hills down here.

Welcome home. Any reason to dress up like a ninja is a solid argument for me.

In the name of dexterity, I went out this weekend to try some different gloves at Columbia, TNF, and Wilsons Leather (really we were at the outlets already, so what the hell). I didn't find anything with fingers that felt remotely warm (had high expectations for the thinner omniheat gloves), but did end up ordering a pair of these yesterday to give them a shot.

I'll still get some decent mitts too... and now I may be shopping for a ninja suit. :biggrin2:

Glad you made it back home! The farthest I ever made it was the front range, and even that was too far for my liking. 4 hour drive to ski? sheesh.

Shoot me a PM when you plan to head up this way for sure. We ride pretty much nothing but Vail/BC unless its early or late season. I'll let you know if I make it down to Telluride this winter, I always mean to make a trip down there but haven't been able to pull it off yet. You guys get storms down there that make me pretty envious

+1 on the ninja suit! Those darn things are so warm, I cant really even wear mine unless its going to be seriously below zero. Too bad they dont make the tuxedo print one in merino.

also +1 on wool. Synthetic stuff still cant touch the abilities of natural fibers. comfortable, moisture wicking, naturally antibacterial, and warm as all getout. Also retains around 80% of its insulating capacity even when wet. Definitely worth the slightly extra $

I'm up in Summit/Eagle almost every weekend riding and will be making at least one trip down south (probably to Silverton), we should have a meetup day to ride! It has been a great season thus far, I just hope the trend at least continues, if not increases. Vail was looking/riding pretty great on Sunday! :D

We get some decent storms for sure but like anywhere it's hit or miss. Funny because I always feel like its summit that is getting hammered. Could just be the "grass is always greener" thing. Snow is always deeper?
I was just starting to get into BC when I left and havent had the chance to dive in fully. I have been shopping for a beacon and A/T setup, also want to take an avy course.
I think that's gonna be next season though, I need to get my legs back under me.
It kinda sucks going from sea level to elevation so frequently. I have a hard time staying acclimated.
I live about 20 south of Silverton near purg and I've never made it up there to ski. Always wanted to go just never made it happen. I will this year for sure though.
going to Jackson in February! Stoked on that.
Definitely get in touch if you guys head this way, if I am in town, I will be skiing. You can count on that.

Anyone wanna dink around exploring today? Preferably north of I-70 on the Eastern slope. Figured this was worth a shot despite short notice... :juggle:

^ jrob those look like turns in Heaven. Well done sir.

I pretty much waited three years for the turns we made this weekend. Best snow in a loooooooong time
