Man, I wish I lived closer--Mt. Antero is on my short list of trips I've been wanting to take, preferably with a side-trip to Browns Lake for some high-altitude camping. Some day I'll make it to that one--maybe we can hook up another time!

I would love to go as well but I don't think I'll be down for a 2-3 hour drive to get to the trail. I get lazy being half an hour away from good wheeling I do want to go some day though but I don't see it in the time frame for this weekend.

I think the only times I like to get out of my runner is to either hook up a winch (which I try not to do) or take pics for all you sorry mofo's

But I guess hiking could be fun too... I'm just lazy sometimes.

Its a nice trail if you drive to the end of the trail its not really a hike more like a walk 50 yards maybe

I'm sure simple hiking takes on a whole new meaning when you're around 14k ft. up! Mt. Antero is one of the highest peaks in CO.

Don't forget to air down! No need to for traction but it's a very bumpy ride, do it for comfort!

I'm not sure where Dot is referring to but the hike I know of is a pretty good climb to the area people search for gemstones.

My guidebook lists the hike to the top as about 1/2 mile, but seems to hint that a hardcore rig can drive it. All I know is the view from up there has got to be incredible! FoG (Bill), I think you're right about me moving out there--I really should. Know anyone hiring?

There is absolutely no way to drive to the top, even if was possible it would be illegal so please don't even think about trying. Here's a local club link if you haven't seen it already.

The walking the last bit that's mentioned is not from the end of the road to the peak. The part referred to is just the last bit of the road that they say some people choose to walk to get to the climbing spot.

I wheel that area a couple times a year and I don't think the last section is harder than the rest. As I already mentioned it's not hard, the high difficulty rating in gets in books like Charles Wells' is because ofthe shelf roads. You don't want to have to pass anyone on the shelf roads so watch way ahead and pull over and wait in the switchbacks for them to pass.

This was as close to Mount Antero that I got. After hiking Mount Princeton I started feeling the effects of altitude sickness and headed back.
