Colorado trip from August 30 - September 4ish

Hi,

We're taking our first family vacation to Colorado from August 30 - September 4ish. We would love to catch up with some locals and head out to the trails.

We will be in Avon, CO from August 30 - September 2. We already have a trip planned on the 30th if anyone else would like to come. We will also have the next 2 days to see the Avon landscape, so any ideas to include with two 4 year olds would be greatly appreciated.

We will then be traveling South to the Ouray area from September 2 - 4th. Nothing is planned as of yet, but we definitely would like to see the area and definitely some offroading with the locals. Any ideas for this area would also be appreciated.

You and your partner would probably LOVE it. The kids..not so much.

Pretty Lights is a music producer from Ft. Collins, CO. He developed a fusion of hip hop / electronic / soul music and created his project.

He now can perform live by himself OR with a 8 piece live band (which is what this weekend will be). An amazing musical show with lasers, visuals, and good vbes.

Which Saturday? The 29th or 5th? Also, what are the levels of the trails? Unfortunately, I'm still TRD PRO- stock.

"Unfortunatley still TRD Pro Stock" haha. Pretty sure you'll be just fine if you'd join. Trails are 3-6 in difficulty. I assume the TRD has skids.

Where are these trails closer to? I will be in the Avon area that particular weekend. I am meeting some forum guys up there as well on the 30th. Unfortunately, we won't get to Colorado until late Saturday the 29th. Otherwise I'd meet you guys there.

Trails are just west of Buena Vista up in the Elk Mountains.

I just got back from doing the Alpine Loop. I used Hurricane Pass and California Pass which made it easy and had stunning views. I can't tell you how long it took because I hiked handies peak the same day. Expect those side by side things on the weekend and a little storm in the afternoon. The route is well signed.

Thank you! We plan on a little hiking but nothing intense, as we'll have two 4 yr olds with us. We have actually ordered kids harnesses so they cannot get away from us on the trails. Lol. Call us over protective!

Any and all of them. A stock SUV can handle anything that area has to offer. And everything there is scenic.

Just saw your post. I wish I would have posted our road trip to CO on this area of the forum as it seems you're getting lots of replies. I posted our trip on the "Mountain" page looking for other travelers and hardly got a response. Anyways, I highly recommend Ophir Pass, Red Mountain Pass (tour of all the mines), and Last Dollar Road. These were all easy roads and will allow your kids to get out and get wet in some streams if they want. I have a stock 4Runner Trail Edition with OEM tires and I had no problems. Just remember to air down to 20psi or so so your kids aren't shook to death. You can check out my post and see the pictures of when I went in late June.

Is there still a lot of snow up in Ouray? If you haven't purchased it already, you need to grab a copy of Charles Wells' book on CO trails. It is essential and has lots of trails, with their ratings, near Ouray.
