Colorado wisdom?

UGH, that sucks! I've been purposely staying waaaaaaaaaaaay behind cars for this reason. The 5th Gen windshield is begging for a rock. Let us know how much your new windshield is, although you might as well wait for sping / early summer now.

How about this? The day of the snow, I was heading West on Valmont from 95th/Hwy 42 into Boulder...was stuck behind a 48' Tractor Trailer that was extra tall (high cube). As it passed under the trees...which were drooping over the roadway under the weight of the wet snow...the trailer was hitting the branches, showering HUGE chunks of wet snow/ice and a few twigs down onto the vehicles behind (me!).

Only happened once and I hung Waaaay back...but put a small scratch on the hood. Lucky it wasn't worse!

Picked this rock up a week ago before the snow. Was trying to quickly pass a live bottom semi (precisely to avoid this situation) so I'm guessing it was directly related to the truck this time. Zero deductible windshield policy with my insurance company though. Sucks about the hood SgnDen, can't say I would have see that one coming.

I can't provide a very meaningful critique on the radar cause it was gift and I haven't owned comparable models. Happy with it other than the false laser alerts, sometimes in the middle of nowhere miles from a paved road. I drive past the Cherry Creek speed enforcement photo van every day to/from work, so it provides a good test to make sure the unit still works. I hardwired it in to the 4Runner with a mute button mounted on the steering wheel, which is nice. You can kind of tell in the photo the wire leaving the radar heads back towards the windshield, where its hidden. That just reminded me I'll have to pull it out from there to get the windshield replaced.

Ha, yeah...you should've heard me in behind the wheel...ahhhh! WTF! It's truly just a TINY mark, so no biggie. It LOOKED a lot worse showering down, that's for sure.

Yeah, you guys don't have state-mandated no deductible windshield replacement out there either, do you? I think I recall seeing that some companies offer it as an option on policies.

Also, how do you like your radar detector?

FWIW, I've owned half a dozen detectors over the years and nothing has come close to the Beltronics STI I've have for the past 5 years. The range is amazing and it has saved my arse tons of times. I've heard great things about the Valentine and Passport models as well, but am hoping to get as much use out of this thing as possible before switching, given the price point. I will say you get what you pay for.

One thing I don't think we've mentioned in this you don't have to leave the pavement in Colorado to find rocks in the road. Only had the truck 10 weeks and it's time for a new windshield.

Wait a minute, don't windshields come with cracks in them from the factory? It's been so long since I have had an unbroken windshield. Or so it seems.

You can, and I do have, get glass replacement insurance. There usually is free chip repair and a $100 deductible on windshield replacement. I usually replace mine every spring.

I just remembered seeing someone, I think it was you SgnDen, that mentioned Willow Creek. How long ago did you live there? I was the computer lab teacher there for a couple years.

I also wanted to add for Bofa that my daughter is a SpEd teacher in Cherry Creek and if your wife happens to be "highly qualified" in that field that jobs are plentiful.

Edit: Bofa - I'm surprised nobody mentioned that buying a place facing south so the sun, rather than you, clear the snow.

She is considered "highly qualified" here and does work with exceptional education students along with her regular students and gifted. She's also ESOL certified which will probably come in handy, although I told her we need to work on her Spanglish. I fear the words and phrases I could teach her would probably cause more harm than good. I think Cherry Creek would be a great fit for her so hopefully she can get in there. I'm sure she will do well no matter where she ends up though. We got her fingerprinted yesterday and are just waiting on a form from her alma mater and we can get her CO teaching license and set her up to apply for next year.

As for facing the south - that's interesting. Why is facing the south better than say, the east, since that's where the sun rises (ignoring the fact that I guess the sun doesn't rise, we revolve right)? I never would have thought to consider that.

Houses facing north will look like they are in the arctic. Facing south will have sun all day. Facing east will get the morning sun but it will still be cold and won't melt as much. Facing west (like my house) will get mid day to sunset and during the warmest time of the day.

With that said, snow will melt off our roads by mid day even when the temps are below freezing. I have seen them steaming below 0*.

Sounds good bofa, Cherry Creek instituted the "highly qualified" a few years ago and I think it means you need to have majored in the subject you teach or something like that. My daughter teaches students with severe needs and double majored in SpEd and also has a Masters so can work anywhere since the need in that area is so high. The "highly qualified" is also why I no longer teach in the district <LOL>

Yep, very funny to drive down a street after snow and see the people on the south side wearing shorts and no coat in their snowless driveway while their neighbors facing north have coats and gloves and are shoveling.

I currently live in Colorado Springs. Its nice and all, its where I met my wife and now Im in the military :wtf: One more year and I'm headed up to Idaho. Only served for 6 years but my time has came to an end. All these mexicans....everywhere I go I can't seem to lose them....perhaps I should stop looking in the mirror. Oh and this whole time I thought they were following me. Yeah we're looked down upon however I too look down upon many others including my own race. Race is not something I judge one by. Diversity is key. Now if you dont have a Runner, I may not like you. I must say I like Castle Rock. Spent some time there. Good Luck with your move and safe travels.

Thanks. Yeah I've heard that I should try to stay north of CO Springs. I've found that being in a military town (Jax is a huge Navy town) can be a bit of a drag.

Hey bofa,
You might want to rethink moving CO, at least for awhile. The liberal pot heads here just passed a modification to the state constitution decriminalizing pot but haven't refuse to back any rules about driving stoned. Until they do, things will be interesting to say the least.
