hi folks..

I'm in the market for an air compressor and I was wondering what are the common size bolts for our rigs?

will an 26 gallons craftsman compressor be sufficient for it or should I go for something bigger?

Sears has an 26 gallons with impact wrench and ratchet for $163 dollars

cause osh (similar to home depot and sears) has 20% off on their craftsman tools and their sockets for the impact wrench for as low as an $1 dollar each.. there is an 9 pc 3/8 in for $5 dollars with lifetime warranty..

Metric sizes 8-24mm would be good to have but if you're looking for impact wrench sockets then I say for sure get a 14, 17, 19, 21, 35. I cant remember if the diff's are 23 or 24. Also a 10 and 12mm Allen socket would come in handy.
 
diff will be 24mm, 15/16 can be used in a pinch as well.

As for the allen sockets stay away from the craftsman 10mm. Unless they changed the design from the taper down version I had years ago its absolute junk. Ask me sometime and I'll show you the scar I have on my wrist from that socket shattering during head bolt removal. I would even recommend the Harbor Freight set over those.

As far as compressor, biggest you can afford. A small one is better than nothing, but don't expect it to be like going to a full on automotive shop. My 60 gallon will keep okay with impact use, but on things like polishing up my ****ty MR2 wheels the other night it was running constantly to keep up with the die grinder, and playing catch up between wheels. Sand blasting is the same situation. Spend a little bit of time on the Garage Journal forum and do some research on the model you are looking at. Just keep in mind a lot of those guys are absolutely nuts and have home shops that would make working for a living shops jealous.
 
compressor, biggest you can afford/fit. dont be afraid to buy a quality brand used off craigslist either, i did, saved a ton. i have a few sets of harbor freight impact sockets that i put through hell, no issues at all.

I agree. For the most part they either work or don't. I got a Craftsman 26 gallon for $45, yes $45, from CL. 4 years old with a little house paint spilled on it. Already used it 40+ hours. Was willing to wait for the right deal and finally got lucky!
 
Make sure you check the recovery rates on these compressors, 60 gallons is great but if the compressor is gonna take 15-20 mins to recover that is as good as useless.

I would get all 13-24mm sockets on impact for metric, and 1/2" - 1 1/16" for american, i stress you having both, american are still very handy to have, especially if you can get them for $1 a socket.
 
Make sure you compare apples to apples when looking at compressor specs. A sixty gallon compressor isn't just a 60 gallon compressor, its all about the recovery. Cfm is the thing to look at. I would rather have a 40 gallon tank with 18 cfm than an 80 gallon tank with 10 cfm. Also look at the pressure they rate the cfm. Some rate at 100 psi and others at 90psi. My air tool guy says it changes cfm's alot to get that extra 10 psi, but to what extent I can't be certain.
 
Personally there are much more important things to buy than a compressor. 99% of the time, hand tools are better anyway. You can "feel" what a bolt is doing before you break or strip it. Most of the time, I use my compressor to air tires and blow dust out of my rig.
