hey i got an 04 sr5. about a week ago my truck felt like it was miss firing. i would rev it to 2 grand and then it would stop. well the other day i started my truck and i started driving and it started to feel like it was miss firing again, at that same time my traction control and vsc both shutoff. hooked up a scanner and it read that cylinder 4 was missfiring. any idea on why these two things would shutoff and where is cylinder 4 so i can check the plug lol i sound like an idiot. thanks guys any help would be appreciated

It sounds like an issue with either the coil or the spark plug wires...

Not sure if this works on the 4runner.

When i had my vw you could test to see if it was a bad coil by having the engine running and by taking out 1 coil at a time.
If by taking that coil out the engine ran worse you, then you knew that coil was good, so you would put that back and take out the next one. Once you found the coil that you took out that didn't make the engine run worse then that was the one needing to be replaced.

Teq, that should work....as long as there are individual coils for each cylinder pair. I'm not sure if this is the way the 4th gen engines or setup....or if they even have plug wires.

I just went through this on my '98 4R and it turned out to be a bad spark plug wire...

The number 4 cylinder should be the driver side middle one. But there may not be an individual coil for it. All the coils may be on the 1, 3, and 5 plugs on the passenger side. If so, the coil on the number 3, which is the passenger middle, is also the coil for the number 4 as well. Either way, remove the coil and clean it out, remove the plug and clean it as well. Put back together and see if that helps.

I agree and the VSC lights happen because the CEL is on. Part of VSC is to control engine output. If the CEL is there's no guarantee the engine will respond properly to VSC initiated commands so they shut it off.

Guys,

The 4th gen 4Runner does not have spark plug wires. And it does have coil-on-plug, so there are separate coils on top of each plug.

Luckily, that makes it really easy to diagnose. One quick check is to swap out two of the coils and see if the problem moves to the new cylinder.

In the back of my mind, I knew that....I think you've corrected me before on that issue.

Correct, sounds like a bad coil!

ok i brought it to my grandfathers friend who is a mechanic. he replaced the plug and now it runs fine. only thing though he said the plug was really wet when he took it out. he said the injector might be shot for that cylinder. any idea on how much this will cost me if it does go and also my traction control and vsc is still off ?

Try a 20-30minute battery disconnect. If that doesn't do it try a zero-point-calibration: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40848
