Compustar Best Buy install Fail

It has a factory option, but factory may not be the best option. The Toyota version has very limited range(same as unlocking with key fob) and limits options. Its also more expensive.

The Compustar has the options to use factory fob, have feedback from different long range fobs, use cell phone app to have unlimited range. Plus you could add security/alarm if you want.

My wife's old car had a Viper system with good enough range to go from window of 10th floor office building two blocks to parking garage and start her car. The fob would tell her if the signal was received by the car and if it actually started.

So if it’s such an important necessity, not just a nice to have, why not purchase a vehicle that has it installed as an option? Again not trying to flame, I know I’m stationed in San Diego so my opinion doesn’t count. I’m surprised it doesn’t come standard in the Limited.

Why even comment if you can't be helpful? I guess I should get rid of my 4Runner since there are cars that fit my needs better out there, even though I don't like them...

I cannot BELIEVE that they ran the wire through the door like that!?!?!? I have been doing auto installs for 15+ years and have never run a wire like that through the door. I have fished several wire harnesses through the firewall in my 4Runners and never thought twice about doing it. Plus they didn't bother to replug the harnesses!? That's something I always check before I finish my installations. What a freaking joke. This is the reason I don't trust anyone else to work on my vehicle, wow

It's an OEM add-on, doesn't mean that it comes standard, Toyota dealerships would gladly charge you $500+ to install one. For those of us that park outside or live in a cold climate, or even hot climate it's nice to start the vehicle and get the fluids flowing as well as letting the climate controls inside the vehicle do their thing before getting into the vehicle. I installed a remote start for mornings like today where there's ice and snow on my vehicle and I fire it up while I'm getting ready for work and it's nice and warm by the time I get in to leave for work (about 10 minutes later)

I hated cold starting and driving my truck before

That’s the most bizarre looking installation I have ever seen… I would be ashamed if this was my own work.

This is a perfect example of why I do all my own electrical these days. It’s also why I tend to stay away from used trucks that have a lot of aftermarket electrical accessories. Unless I can get an opportunity to inspect, assume it was done by some high school kids on a budget with no experience.

OP – Take that shit back. Full refund, and a back-charge for restoration.

OP I know you've already paid for the install and device. And it sucks what has happened to you. If however, you do take it back and get a refund you should check out 12volt.solutions.

I installed their remote start with the iPhone app/service that allows me to locate, lock/unlock and start my truck from anywhere with a cell signal (in the US). The install took all of 90 minutes taking my time. Zero wire splicing. They have a great vid on install (check their site). If I didn't have the cell accessory, the install would have been under an hour. Plug-n-play...so you can remove it if you ever get rid of the truck.

Getting off the airplane and pulling up the iPhone app to start the truck is awesome. By the time I make it to my truck the oil is warm, the inside is toasty...and I can start my trek back home.

Good luck.

T-harnesses and cell phone control is nothing new here. The OP bought a tharness solution and he can add phone control to that.

Cool. I was not inferring one way or the other. I was just giving my experience with 12volt and the setup I have.

With big box stores there is no reason their service is going to be competent. People demand the lowest prices on everything and want them to match internet prices etc. It's not cheap to employ competent workers, so the idea that they could possibly afford a competent staff is utterly impossible while maintaining their profit margins. Your only hope is you get some kid at his first job who is way too smart to be working at best buy and wont be there for long.

wow. i'm flabbergasted on the install.

I would have been much happier if you said you did this yourself and then we can say hey, this is the right way to do it. or have you tried this way.

It would have been much less aggravating! what scares me even more? if this is what you can see, what does it look like where you cant see it OMG. what happens when you take it in for service and the dealership sees a wiring mess and immeadiatly blames that.

This job you got is not a representation of everyone in the 12volt industry. this actually gets me mad. i fowarded you photos to their head of tech.

Hi man. Please get back to me and let me know what he says. I would like to have some expert advice when I go back and talk to the manager and let him know what is going on...

I just got the accessories variant in the mail and will be installing it in the next day or two.

Also seems like a good solution and is a little cheaper right now. Paid $280 shipped. I think the 12volt version is about $50 more even when using a coupon.

I have one question, I noticed that when I left the truck in 4x4 mode the romote start does not work. Is that normal ? I asked my friend and he told me it is supposed to work.

Hey Sebastian,
Are you missing the insulation that is attached to the inside of the hood?
Was it removed for the photo or did Best Buy remove it and not replace it?

I’d be upset with that installation. Whoever ran that wire around the door needs a different job
