Considering selling the Runner.

Hey guys,

I have one final debt to pay off and I'm considering selling my Runner. It pains me to even consider it, but the thought crosses my mind more and more often here recently.

This is hands down the best used vehicle I've ever owned. I bought it with 199k miles on it and since then I've done a lot to it. Timing belt, water pump, radiator and hoses, tensioner pulleys, and new belts all at 200k as well as upper and lower ball joints, steering rack, tires and wheels. Also, caught all the fluids changes up from bumper to bumper. At 230k, had all 30k fluids changed as well. It currently sits at 233k.

The runner runs and drives smooth as butter. The a.c. blows cold, and everything flat out works, except the sunroof. It could use paint on the hood and roof, but that's it. I'd drive it anywhere today. Also, my sig includes several of the upgrades as well.

If I were going to sell it, what should I ask? I don't want to give away such a great running car.

In CO they tend to sell a little over blue book when mileage is a little lower. Once you break that 200k mark drastically lowers. Your looking at $2800-$3k blue book value. You wont get much higher than that. Good luck!
 
With how much you'd get I wouldn't sell it. If you then have to pay of a bill and but another car you won't have much money left, plus you'll have much of the same maintenance to do on the new ride that you've done in your 4runner.

Figure out how much interest you'd pay with however long you would take to keep your rig and pay off another 3k. That's the price to keep your rig.

I'd say unless Lenny is coming to break your legs if you don't pay up it's probably not worth it.

Yeah, and not that that's an unfair price for a vehicle of this age and mileage, but the struggle I'm having is that it's worth more than that to me just being a reliable older vehicle that may have plenty of life left in it.

Just can't decide.

Nah it's really a small debt, and I have a pretty new car in the garage waiting. I've just been driving the Runner like crazy and it's not showing any signs of slowing down, so I was thinking get rid of it while I can.

May not though. Might just keep it and go for the high score lol

Yea thats where I'm at. I have 260k miles and lots of money into her. I feel I will be stuck with her for life now that I feel pot committed.
 
After looking on craigslist constantly for months I can tell you the price will depend where you live but I see tons of 4runners with 200k+ miles going for 3-5,000+ depending on the year. If I were you I would just keep it because it would be honestly worth more to you than you could get.
 
I paid $5500 for my 02 SE w/ 234k miles, 100% rust free. It was fairly well maintained, the interior was dang near spotless, and the exterior was in great shape as well. The whole thing was much better off than many runners that I checked out with far less than 200k miles. While I do feel like I might have paid a little more than I should with the miles, a 4wd runner in good shape is a rare find down here and they go QUICK. I'd post some CL ads down in Atlanta or NW georgia as well.
 
Are you planning on replacing the 4runner with something, or are you good with 1 vehicle? Fairly new car in the garage, what's the reliability reputation on that vehicle? If you looking at selling a vehicle to cover a debt and you have two options to sell, you should weigh that instead of just selling the 4runner as an option.

You have to decide, in the long run, which one is going to cost more to keep running? Which one are you going to have more fun in?
Which one has a better community to help support you if you run into issues?
If money is what your after, which one is going to produce the largest return?
 
Don't sell it or forever join the "I wish I still had that__________" Club. Besides you have a lot of time and money into it it sounds. I just picked up a Sundays only job to help ease the pain of my debt without having to depart with any of my assets

This sounds like you've decided, and in my opinion you're making the right choice. If all of your debt can be settled by selling a 97 4Runner, you're in pretty good shape compared to the rest of the nation.

I know nothing about your financial situation, but I'd recommend you just put a payment plan in place, and start chopping away at that last thing you've got going on.
 
I agree with most everyone on here, let me just say this...

I totally agree with the consensus here. I had a good chuckle over the "Lenny" & "I wish I still had that" comments. That last one is so true.
Let me just say this, as it might help in your decision.
Just yesterday, I was looking at the Toyota website, checking out the 2015 Runners. Let me tell you that what we have in the 3rd gen is like "gold".
The new Runners are more like Toyota is trying to keep up with a Cherokee which to me is no where near as functional as what we have.
The new Runner seems more like a "Jap-O-lac."
It also really looks like 2015 "may" be the last year???
Absolutely no confirmation of a 2016 yet, just rumors. They have confirmed 2016 models of their other models...
Hold on to it, you know what you have done & what it needs.
And you also have one of the best, most capable, greatest valued 4X4's ever made...
Just my opinion, (but probably shared by many)

Yeah, you're right. That's actually how my wife and I have got ourselves into the shape we're in. Responsible budgeting, living below our means, and staying away from debt while aggressively paying it off. I'm a huge Dave Ramsey disciple which has served us well.

Think I'm going to keep her. She's been too good to me for me to cut her loose. Plus, it might have some years left in it. Even more than I think.

That's what I'm most afraid of. Too many times have I sold vehicles in the past and regretted it.
 
My wife and I are hardcore Dave Ramsey people, too. I had the same internal debate about my truck when we were on step 2. I ended up keeping it and it was the right choice.

If it was a $20,000 truck it would be different, but it's a small debt and an inexpensive truck: you can knock it out quickly with your cash flow. I know from listening to calls on Dave's show for years that's probably what he'd say, too.
