Any slider that sticks out even a little will stop people from opening their front door into your car. Rare doors have more clearance due to the rare wheel cut out, a lift can help with that. I still believe in parking wisely.

True, I've just seen some make theirs as tight to the truck as possible which wouldn't be very helpful for a step either! I always try to park away from everybody, but unfortunately in some lots that's not an option.

I am thinking of going with the shrockworks sliders with the dimpled tread plates, powder coated textured black. A coworker has those on his 5th gen and they seem to be very nice.

I've heard the opposite. Sliders that stick out further will protect others from door dinging.

Bump to see if anyone has opinions on which is the better options for sliders that double as steps and stuck out far enough!

I have Budbuilt angled sliders with the kick out, works fine as a step, lot's of room to put your foot down, very similar to the stock running boards in thta regard and just a bit higher. I can take some close ups if you would like. These are very good quality IMO and you can order them flat if you prefer.

-im sure it's not very beefy. But will it handle basic bumps and protect the frame and rocker panel with basic wheeling?

I currently have the predator steps and like that this looks exactly like it (could possibly install and wife not notice!)
Several other more popular ones I'm considering but wanted to get some info before ruling this out.

the NFAB RKR's will essentially provide the same protection as your predator steps do since they bolt to the rocker panel and not the frame. Easy, Moderate trails you should be fine. If things get bouldery, make the decision if you think your truck can handle it, walk it first to choose a smart line and have a spotter.

I was just visiting the crew @CaliRaised getting ditch/fog lights installed in Buena Park, and their sliders are well into production and look awesome! The welds and construction looked excellent, they offer 25 degree, top plate, kick out, powder coating, and universal fitment for KDSS. And all in a very competitive price point. I know where my money is going very soon..25 degree kick out, raw, no top plate.

4x4labs sliders installed

I installed a set of sliders from 4x4labs today on my 18 TRD premium with kdss. Did the job myself with a pallet jack and some 2x4s to get the level. The 4Runner is high enough off the ground stock that I could just slide around on my back underneath, so no hoist needed. I pulled the kdss pump skid, crossover skid, and dropped the fuel tank skid. Getting the u-bolt hardware around the frame and routed correctly through various lines was the trickiest part of the job. And it was tricky. I reinstalled the fuel tank skid and crossover skid. No cutting or modifying other than the removal of the kdss pump skid (because the sliders now cover it) and a small spacer bracket for the pump. I’m impressed with them. They fit perfectly. The u-bolts that go around the frame are in targeted spots that are precise to not interfere with other lines. The kdss system much more protected. I’m stoked, they’re burly. Not an easy job for one dude, but way worth the effort.

A couple people had questions about how these mount so I figured I'd post the info here as well.

They don't touch the pinch weld. They are frame mounted and have 3/4" gap between the slider and the pinch weld to allow for some flex on a full weight drop. They should never contact the pinch weld.

They stick out far enough to be used as a step and the gussets are placed where you step at both doors.

Victory 4x4 is a sister company to JcrOffroad who has been making Jeep armor for 15+ years.

Has anyone actually broken a slider or had a slider fail it's intended purpose?

New 4runner owner - I do my research so I've read 100's of posts and experiences about at least a dozen slider types (this thread is great!).

I've been looking closely at the mounting methods and whether they wrap the frame or have a flat plate, how many supports, gussets etc.

However I'm wondering if perhaps the strength argument is academic and they're all strong enough for what they're intended to do.

So to that end I'm wondering if anyone has found user testimonial about a bolt-on 4runner slider failure where the slider bent/broke and/or body damage was done that could have been avoided. (Yes I've searched, and I've come up with nothing, thus the question - maybe there are no failures and they're all strong enough more or less, so it's just pick the appearance/features that I like best which would simplify the decision).
