Contemplating Purchase of '15 LE 4X4 - Input Appreciated

Hello T4R Community,

I am new here but not new to internet forums and certainly not new to 4Runners! I owned – and loved - a 2001 SR5 Sport a few years ago but sold it for something that was more city-friendly and had better gas mileage. Since then I’ve owned a few different cars and am currently contemplating the purchase of a 2015 LE 4x4.

I actually considered a ’13 last year but ended up buying a Rav4. I know that probably raises some eyebrows, but I had a 70 mile commute at the time and the Rav4 made more sense with gas mileage. I’ve only had it for a year now, but am considering moving up to something larger... so here I am.

Last year, I actually narrowed my shopping down to the 4Runner and Rav4 but there was one big thing about the 4Runner that I didn’t love: How it drove. My 2001 and the 2006 we have in the family drove firm and sporty, but like a truck… “Like a 4Runner.” I’m sure that many of you know what I mean by that. After a spin in the 2013, I was shocked with how floaty and disconnected the 5th generation had become. I will admit that I drive rather aggressively so something smaller and rev-happy, like the Rav4, has worked well for me for commuting purposes and city driving.

One of my primary issues with the Rav4 has been driver comfort. I am 6’1” and built wide, so my frame is a very snug fit in the seat of the Rav. It’s just me most of the time, so I’m not at a loss for space for kids or other people, but a larger cargo area would be nice for weekend trips and getaways. Honestly, the biggest thing drawing me to the 4Runner is the Redwood leather option… very similar to a 2003 GS 300 that I had and sold last year. I love the color. There are also numerous upgrades like the JBL Sound System, curb appeal, roll-down rear window, etc.

I am not particularly impressed with Toyota’s decision to go with full-time 4x4 on the Limited, as this seems like an unnecessary waste of gas for me. With that said, my Rav4 is AWD and I’ve definitely enjoyed the traction in rain and light off roading.

To those of you who have moved up from previous generations of 4Runner, how do you feel about how disconnected the 5th gen drives? Was there any change in 2014 over 2013? Not that I can find in press, and I assume not knowing Toyota, but figured you guys would know best. Is there anything that can be done to tighten up how the truck drives? I don’t assume so, but again, figured I would ask.

Also, what is your MPG like? I drive probably 70/30 highway/city, and know the 4Runner will be way less than my Rav4, but am wondering how bad it will truly be.

One other thing I don’t like is the use of a 5AT in 2015, but with this being a big, torquey motor, it’s not like it’s particularly rev-happy and needs more gears to compensate. Any thoughts or comments here? Do you find yourself wanting for an extra gear in acceleration or on the highway?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance.

There have been no changes suspension-wise since 2010 and actually the current suspension is very close to the 2003-2009 models. All 4Runners get the same mpg, around 20 on highway and 18 or so in the city regardless of full or PT 4WD. With that said very few buy the 4Runner because of it's "stellar" fuel efficiency. You sound like you really care about that aspect of that since you alluded to it twice in your post. Sounds like a Highlander would be better for you.

Lotta questions! :)

I moved from a 2004 Tacoma to the 4runner and even from there the 4runner is a more ponderous beast. Though you get used to it in short order and it actually seems peppy for being so big.

I get about 19mpg these days with about the same freeway/city as you and that's with a lift/rack/offroad tires (stock size though).

As far as the AT goes, at 80mph on flat terrain, yeah a 6th gear might be nice, but that's the only time. If you were going up hill (and out west here your always going uphill it seems) then you are in 4th and 5th a lot anyway.

In the end the shear capability and utility of the vehicle are what I truly love about it. Can take 4 adults around in comfort or lay the seats down and haul a ton of stuff or sleep in the back. And it's offroad prowess is pretty amazing :)

Thanks for your input.

I have honestly thought a bit about the Highlander but, at the risk of sounding shallow, will admit that I don't have much of a desire to own another mundane commuter "mom" car (Rav4). Also prefer how a traditional BOF SUV drives vs. crossover. MPG is a price I'm very willing to pay... just wondered ballpark what you guys were getting between fillups.

1. had a 2004 SE v8 : the 2014 LE seems to ride a tad better to that (they both were FT4WD and both had XREAS) and the mpg is better in the 2014 vs the 2004

2. FT4WD is the only selling point when I bought my 2014, due to 6-9 months of winter we have up here

3. this is 80% pavement / 15% maintained county dirt roads / 5% crap roads (but nothing close to off roading) for those times I need it when going fishing.

4. now compared to the warden's 2012 Tacoma dcab, after 2 years, still doesn't creak but then again she just recently broke 15k miles on it. the last month I have noticed some creaks (rubber mounts needing lube?) on the 4runner going over patchy road leading up to the house.

5. overall (minus the etune/nav features, that's a whole other issue and a there are threads on that but I could care less if it gets resolved as I moved past that with 3rd party solutions) I love the 2014 LE compared to the Tacoma and my late Subaru legacy 3.6R.

6. I did look into a highlander and those are super nice and if ever decide to quit fishing, that may be my next choice as I would never need to go off the beaten path.

attached is my travel log since I bought the 4runner.

I have a 2014 Limited, and I can tell you there was a noticeable difference between the SR5 and Limited when I test drove a year ago. Did you drive a 13 Limited, or SR5? I very much like the ride and handling of our Limited.

As for mileage... I unfortunately do more city than highway, but still manage to get around 18 MPG or so (actual calculation, not from dash display), and have gotten as high as 22 and some change on extended hwy trips when we're not loaded very heavy with stuff.

Thanks again for the input!

I drove a '13 Limited last year, but plan to head over and drive a '14/'15 Limited this weekend. I'll report back with my opinions/findings afterwards :D

well being in ATL, do you really need 4x4? if your not going off-roading, or backwoods trails to a fishing spot, cabin in the woods, moonshine still, I would consider a 4x2 4runner.

let me be clear about this:

You are worried about the cost of the fuel difference between 20 and 24mpg over the life of this vehicle but you are more than willing to blow the cost difference between the 2 + 10% tax title and registration on the switch?

seems pennywise and pound foolish.

At 75mph you can get 20mpg in good weather, fairly level terrain. However, I've gotten as worse as low 17s at that speed. Best I ever got was about 20.5 at that same speed. My day to day driving is 17-18mpg in the warmer months and more like 16-16.5mpg in the winter... but my commute is just over 10 miles round trip and is uphill at least one part of the drive. Overall, I have a tough time getting much better than 18mpg on the highway. Don't have the patience/time to see how I'd do @ 65mph.

People often brag about great fuel economy but typically omit driving habits. Mine is what it is.
