Control Arm Bushing Advice

upper c.arm bushings

There is a metal sleeve inside the bushing for the bolt where do I find the proper sleeve. Will the bushings I buy come with sleeve? Everything on mine has disintegrated so I can't tell what all I have just know it is a ild ride when I shift. It fishtails. Will the lower control arm be the same? I don't want to buy the arms either. Thank you in advance.
 
I went to the dealer to get the alignment cam for my lower arm. I think that's what you're referring to. The upper and lowers are different. At least on a 4th gen.

I think it depends on the bushing sets, they may come with the sleeves you are talking about.
 
my bad 98 4runner

Sorry I didn't identify vehicle. Its a 98 4runner and it's the rear upper control arms that are bad. Actually all the rubber is going. I think thete are sleeves for the bolt to go through after pressing bushing in. Like I said earlier everything has disintegrated so I am not sure about sleeves it is just a guess. Are the lower control (rear) bushings the same size as the uppers? Thanks for responding.
 
You don't mean the rear wheels right? You mean the rear of the front upper arm? Check with the vendor you are looking at for your bushings. Here is a pic of my 4th gen uppers

Well I read a bit and I don't know much about the rear end, but I didn't think we had control arms back there. Maybe I'm confused.

A google search brought up some forum posts about bushing changing, just search there and you may end up finding a walk throuhh

Yes the rear end has 4 control arms. IMO the uppers are way under sized if you plan to put any tire larger than stock on it. I see myself destroying these quickly and fabbing up my own from some DOM tubing.
 
I've never seen a rear upper control arm failure on this site.

4Ripcord suffered one BUT the arm did not break, the built holding it in came loose. And I believe he had removed it and re-installed it before that failure happened.

About the front bushings. They are $40 / pair at Ca!melback Toyota Online Parts.

If you don't buy the Toyota ones you will regret it.

You've replaced yours? How fast will others deteriorate?

I've got Whiteline and Energy Suspension for both of my 4Runners, neither installed yet though.

Whiteline for the black one which gets all the money and Energy for the 97'.

Why would you stay away from these two?
 
I never like "beating" bushings or bearings. For control arm bushing, you can make a simple tool for under $20. Go to a hardware store and buy 1/2" threaded rod (or the biggest size you can buy that will go through you control arm bushings). Buy a few washers that are the size of the bushings you are pressing out, and get 2 washers that are larger than the bushings. Also get 2 nuts.

Remove control arm. put the rod through both openings on the bushings. one one side of the control arm put the washers bigger than the bushings and a nut. On the other side place the washers that are slightly smaller than the bushings and the nut. Use an impact gun and deep socket and start tightening down on the side with the smaller washers. You will see the washer/but press the bushings out. You may need some heat if the bushings are stubborn. Use the same "tool" to install new bushings. here is a crude drawing of the description above:




I have a press in my garage, but still prefer this method. You can pretty much measure the bushings with a caliper without removing anything off of the truck.
 
I used the bottle jack that comes with the truck to press my lower control arm bushings out. Worked like a charm. I replaced mine with Whiteline poly bushings though, so I'm not sure how pressing then back compares. The Whiteline ones install very easily though.

If you use the bottle jack he careful because your bushings will come shooting out with great velocity. So don't point the bushings towards anything you like.

Here is what I say .... WHY would you not use the Toyota part?

WHY!

It is only $40 per wheel and the part has been proven to last 10 years. In fact they often go 15 easily.

I still have my original bushings and they seem fine.

If you go with poly bushings cool. Just don't be surprised if they harden and squeek after 5 years. It happens.

Look for my thread on replacing the rear upper and lower control arm bushings.

I bought the uppers complete brand new from amazon and looked identical and fit perfect.
