Convert door handle rod to cable?

As part of my new stereo installation, I added damping material to the door's metal surfaces. However, I'm finding that the main source of rattles in the door is the stupid rod that connects the handle to the latch mechanism. Has anyone converted this to a more modern cable system? I'd imagine it'd be fairly straightforward, if I could find/make the bracketry needed to connect the ends of the cables (barrels).

Having a cable actuate the latch would mean I could fasten the cable housing down to the door...no more rattling rod!

Ideas?

sounds like it would be worth a shot. whats the worst that could happen? your out $20 bucks from the kit and you go back to factory mechanism for the doors.

Yup, I might do it. First, I'll look at alternative methods to quiet the rod mechanism. The lock rod also vibrates in its plastic tube...not sure what I can do about that.
