Coolant flush

I bought two gallons from the dealer yesterday for $20.94/gal + tax.

The Zerex Asian was $17/gal at my local napa... really not worth the difference in price. If it was 1/2 the price of SLLC id buy it up.

Yes.. I paid the same.. my napa or oriely's have zerex for 13bucks..

I only went to toyota because I called honda dealer next door and the stupid kid said their coolant is 11.99 a gal. When I got there an older man said 22 bucks a gallon.. I said I called an hour ago and some kid said it was 11.99.. He said there are only 2 of them there. I gave the kid a dead look while he was sitting there. Dumbass.. I was going to call him out on it but it was not worth it. Its the principal. Its why I called before I went. kinda defeats the purpose.

Yes I agree its not worth it to buy other than OEM for the price difference. Id kick myself if aftermarket coolant cause my water pump to wear prematurely. My truck had it replace before I bought it. at 120k. I want it to last another 100k.

My acura just reached 100k. I dont plan on changing the water pump anytime soon. maybe 150k or when I have time.

Just a gripe of prediluted coolant costing 20 bucks a gallon. Id gladly pay that for the concentrate, that they no longer sell.
 
Is it ok to mix the Zerex Asian with SLLC? In other words is it ok to drain the radiator (SLLC) and refill with Zerex Asian while the remaining coolant in the engine block/core remains SLLC? Or would it be necessary to drain 100% of the SLLC prior to adding Zerex Asian?

Just curious if they are compatible mixed or if they could potentially gum up due to the different brands mixing...

Sorry I have been out of the country (actually in an airport at Copenhagen waiting for my delayed flight) and didn't have WiFi where I was staying for the week.

Yes you can mix Zerex Asian and Toyota SLLC if you must. I prefer to do full flushes with one or the other; but Zerex is designed to mix with other coolants (part of the reason it is a yellow color as it is least likely to discolor other coolants.

Just an FYI, the Zerex Asian is now Pink just like Toyota's SLLC.
 
So what I’m getting from this is drain the radiator, pull the thermostat, replace thermostat, fill halfway, run till warm, drain again and then refill 100%? Going to get this done before it gets too cold. I’m at 147k and as long as I’ve had it (since 90k) it’s never been done. Everyone using the aisin thermostat? Should I replace the radiator with a Denso while I’m at it?

There are also drain plugs on each side of the block. 1 on each side. You can undo those and get most of the coolant out of the block as well.

Also Aisin makes a pink toyota coolant as well. It is very similar to the Toyota stuff, if not the same.

Basically if you do not drain from the plugs on either side you have to make sure that you flushed from the engine blocks. Only way to be sure that the thermostat opened up is keep repeating the cycle while heating up car to operating temperature and adding stress by putting heater to max. This stresses the thermostat to open up and circulates the fluid (in this case distilled water is used to as the substitute) this might take a while and some gallons of distilled water to be sure. But make sure you keep filling in the distilled water and in order to be sure best to get car running at operating temp and heater at full blast. Personally draining from both sides of the engine block is the best way to be certain. But this is a work around. Also he says there might be residual water in the system and this may offset the 50/50 balance. But it's better than coolant turned acidic corroding the water pump etc. Hope this helps!

******EDIT: This method would leave the 50/50 ratio of coolant to water disturbed which is ok if youre in a warmer climate but if you're in a colder climate best to ensure 50/50 or even 60/40 with coolant being the higher ratio in order to prevent freeze in the lines. Best to drain engine plugs on both sides to ensure total drainage of coolant from engine block and ~50/50 ratio.************************
