Coolant Leak and Overheating

So I took the Runner out the other day and it was running fine. Suddenly it starts getting hot and white smoke was coming from under the hood. I head home let it cool down and then start it up again to see if I could figure out what happened. It was running fine just sitting in the driveway so I let it warm up again. Once warm it starts leaking coolant and smoking under the hood. No leaks after I shut it off. I am guessing that the thermostat is working correctly and that the problem is the water pump. What do you guys think? Just praying it isn't the dreaded head gasket...:roadkill:

Leaking from where? Isolate the leak

It only leaks when running and warm so not the radiator or any of the hoses. Judging from where the smoke is, the leak is from the front or passenger side of the motor.

If you know its leaking. Look further into it and figure out where it's leaking. It's by that hard. The problem is there. How are we suppose to know what the issue is lol. Sigh...

Open the Hood and find exactly where the coolant is coming from. If your gonna guess then your just gonna throw parts at it..maybe you'll get lucky

Where is the smoke coming from? Go watch it with a flashlight at night and pinpoint it. My 3.0 had a leak from the little hoses right between the engine and firewall. The coolant was dripping onto the crossover pipe and burning up, so there was never any leaks.

If you can't find the leak you can do a pressure test on the cooling system, you'll find it then. Most auto parts stores will lend you the tester.

Check what most people call a "water bypass hose" it is on the intake beside the thermostat, It would only leak when running and wouldn't always leak from a pressure test. start the vehicle and watch the hose and rev the motor to see if you see any come out.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I finally found waht I was looking for in this post on another forum 22R-E oil coolant mixing, other than headgasket? > 4X4REVIEW.COM: 4X4 Discussion Forums > 4X4REVIEW.COM. Looks like I will need to get a whole new timing set. Can't wait to sweat it out in the garage...anyone know a good mechanic in the Phoenix area? It's too hot here for this, too bad it didn't hold up a couple more months.
