Coolant Leak!

A few days ago my truck started overheating up the street from my house so I shut her off and coasted in, when I looked under i had a pretty good amount of coolant leaking down the back of my engine. I cannot see where its coming from but with all my heater hoses intact it leads me to believe my head gasket has been compromised. :rant:

Now with that being said, does anyone know of any good master rebuild kits?


When i bought the truck the guy said it had been rebuilt and the head gasket had been just changed but who knows, for my peace of mind Im going to do it myself so i don't always have to worry if something going to fail on my rig with 300k+ miles on it. My head do look like they have been to a machine shop.

engnbldr.com has some great rebuild kits at an unbeatable price. I used their rebuild kit, cam and street rv head when I rebuilt my motor.

Before you decide to rebuild your motor, why not take a closer look and make sure it wasn't a coolant line going to the heater core? Even if was a head gasket, why rebuild the motor based off of that? Do a compression test to see if you even need to rebuild the motor. You may get away with just doing a head gasket if that is what gave up.

I understand wanting a fresh new motor just for the sake of knowing that it's good, but if it's not broken don't fix it.

personally I dont know of any for the 3vz im next gen but google is where i find all my info at. I find a kit or a something then I look up reviews for it.

Before you get a rebuild kit, dig in and find out what is broken.
 
Yeah I know i need to do a compression check, I'm waiting on available space in one of my dads buildings so i can put her in and tear it down. If money and time was an issue then i would do the head gasket, saying it is the HG, and slap it back together. But since i do have the time and i plan on keeping this truck, i think i need to just make it new! It burns oil like crazy and has what i think is a bearing noise off idle.
 
I was looking at that place before sv-dude. Is the stuff they sale good quality?
$298 for a full bottom end rebuild kit seems to good to be true.

The guy knows the 22re like nobody else, and provides excellent customer service. It's practically impossible to go wrong with engnbldr.
 
Have you already checked the hoses at the very back, middle of the engine? There are a couple hoses that run into a sensor bank back there. There is a upside down U-shaped one that is hard to see/get to. When that hose went bad, I had a leak that was very similar to yours, so I'd take a look at that.

Also, if you end up needing to rebuild, I'd go with engnbldr.com. If you do some searching around here and on yotatech, you will find he's very highly recommended. Agree with Kid, customer service is fantastic. When I called with a couple questions about the parts he uses in the 22re timing kits, he was very helpful and had my stuff to me within a couple days.

I'll take a picture today to show what the offending part looks like. My mechanic told me it's very common for this part to rust out as mine did.

The fun part is - you have to take the plenum, and intake off to get at it.

Okay - I was able to sneak a few minutes to take some pictures.

Here is the part on my 93 that was leaking radiator fluid.

Here's roughly where the part is located. It's pretty much in the center behind the engine. I only found the leak with my bore scope.

While your replacing the part - now would be a good time to inspect/replace the timing belt, and water pump. Here's what mine looked like - it wasn't pretty.

Thank You riff raff for taking the time to help! I will have to investigate this part When i get the chance, I figured i would have to remove the intake anyways because i cant see where its coming from. I will report back when I check this out.

Do you know what that part was called or how much it was?

I think it most definitely is that return hose. I just watched the very back of the engine and started to see water leaking from between the heads in the valley under the intake.

I thought it was weird because it ran fine just was overheating and leaking, so when i just ran it I checked the radiator and it was bone dry! It had ran dry in my 10 minute drive home from work. :moping:

Look like i will be replacing things if anything else is bad while replacing that hose.

The part was called by my mechanic the "water bypass pipe". The receipt is out in my truck, and I'll dig it out tomorrow. I did find an exploded view of the coolant system.

Also - it's a dealer part so you may have to get one from a Toyota stealership. I wouldn't trust one from a junk yard.

Here's the exploded image -- part number appears to be 16268 (but verify this for your 4Runner!)

Here's a link to order it online. Probably cheaper than your local stealership - if you can wait for it. I would definitely call them first - and have your VIN number handy!

I would strongly encourage you to replace all the plumbing if/when you have it all torn apart. No sense in doing the same job twice! Especially if you're out in the middle of no where, and a coolant hose goes south on you.

Check back tomorrow, and I'll update this post with the part cost - if it's listed on the receipt.

I'm going to definitely going to replace the timing belt, water pump and that No.1 water bypass hose. Once I get it apart I will check all the other lines and I may have a leaky injector so I might just do everything that needs replacing while the manifolds off.

Again thank you for your help, you gave me hope! Haha

I believe the technical name is: pipe, water bypass #1. part # is 16268. I replaced mine last summer, no leak but it looked like it could go at any time. Cost about 100 bucks, maybe less from the dealer.

Be warned, those stupid little bypass hoses will cost you a small fortune to
replace.
