Cooper Discoverer ST

Is anyone running the Cooper Discoverer ST? I'm not referring to the ST Maxx or STT Pro. I like the fact that the ST comes in 275/70/17 c-load, 50 lbs. I really like the looks of the BFG KO2, but I don't think I want the weight penalty or on-road harshness associated with an e-load tire (KO2 @ 275 weighs 55 lbs).

You'll thank yourself for E-rated tires when you hit the trails.

I jumped from D to E (not a big change) and don't notice the change.

Also, an extra 5lbs at each corner isn't what I would consider a major change in weight at 55lbs vs 50lbs.

With that being said, Cooper is a great brand and you'll probably enjoy those tires. I researched the brand quite a bit before my last tire purchase and they (S/T Maxx) were a final choice of mine.

Is there another reason why you want C rated tires?

I have my 275/70R17s set at 40psi and they're not harsh at all. Maybe the tiniest bit over really rough terrain, but that's it.

Most of my off-roading is on the beach (South Padre Island). I don't think an E-rated tire would help a lot there. But, I do hit some of the trails around central Texas which are VERY rocky, and an E-rated tire would be golden in those situations.

Heavier tires = less MPG and sluggish acceleration.

I've read on this forum that E-rated tires are bit harsh on the road.

Since this is my daily driver, I'm just trying to get a good compromise tire. I know... if I compromise, I won't get a tire that's good at anything.

I understand that mindset.

Give the Duratracs a look. A little pricey, and they're great on all terrains (more of a hybrid between AT and MT). I had them and switched to the Toyo M/T, but I still had plenty of giddy up even with the weight I have and lift on my truck. D rated, so they'll give you a little more durability on the rocks and they're good on sand as well (drove them on the deep sand in OBX).

I've been looking at this tire as well since it's available in "C" in 275/70/17. When reading on here, there will be 10 people who say their "E" load tires ride just fine......then there will be 10 more who say the complete opposite. I realize it's largely individual preference and opinion. I just got my '16 4Runner. It's a second vehicle. My main truck is a new F250 with a 6" Carli lift and 37" Toyos on 22's. I love the ride/feel of the 4Runner over my F250. I do not want to lose this.
