Correct 4WD Shifting

Just got my runner back from the shop. (fixed power steering). Also, he figured why my 4WD wasn't engaging. He said someone had swapped vacuum hoses or something..? Weird.
Anyway, I just want to be sure when I use 4WD the correct way to move into 4HI or Lo.
Need to be stopped, I assume..
Neutral and then shift? thanks

Yep, stop. neutral. switch
and then be sure to disengage 4wd before exiting dirt. it helps to be on loose surface in order to disengage the 4wd

You can shift into 4hi at speeds up to 50 mph. 4 low you need to be basically stopped.

Well, 4runnerBrett got the closest, but still missed a tad--with the 2nd Gen you can shift on the fly into 4HI as mentioned, but you can also shift into 4LO up to 18 mph according to Toyota's own recommendation in the manual. No stopping, no backing up, no fuss.

Does that apply to the 5 speed too? The tcase behind my auto would shift in and out of low on the fly, I can't do that with the gear drive tcase.

Not sure about the gear-drive units--all of my previous ones were chain-drive. I'm pretty sure my 5-speed 2nd Gen was the same as the auto I had before it.

While my experience agrees with you, I highly recommend stopping to shift to 4 low. Also, there is no need to physically put the stick in neutral. Once you step on the clutch, you can shift anywhere and anyway all day long.

I have a 22re manual, and manual hubs. If the hubs are locked, it glides into 4wd at any speed, as it should.

I grabbed one off eBay recently. The one for my '93 was around $60, so I got one for a '94 instead for under $15.
