Cracked windshield.

Hello, bad news for me sadly my windshield cracked. It wasn't a rock that broke it there was no impact. I suspect the temperature outside and the window heating option. It cracked while I went to pickup my girl from school.

Is there any chance that it was defective ?




I already replaced the damn thing 2 times since I bought it... fishing trips are hardcore where I live lol.



Let me know what you guys think, I find it sad that it cracks like that for no reason, even if its a hot cold issue.

I'm convinced that windshields on the 5th gen are more like sugar glass than safety glass. Chips and cracks are definitely a thing.
 
I have already had to replace my windshield, mine was due to a rock off a semi:rolleyes:

I will say that Safelite has installed the same windshield twice already and probably needs to be reinstalled for a third time. The first time they did not even glue the bottom of the windshield to the body and it sounded like a hurricane in the cab while on the interstate. They were good to come back out and re-install it by a different tech (he told me they didn't glue it down) only problem now is the wind noise is better than the hurricane previous, but it is still not factory quite. I don't know that is is a subpar install or sub-factory grade glass. Either way im not happy with it.

Oh dont forget to make sure you get the heated glass if you have that currently. They originally put a non-heated windshield in it before realizing that it had a heated one installed from the factory. (don't know how that happened because i only reminded them of that about ten times.)

Good news though the windshield is cheap and if you search for a discount code online and order off their site it was only $250 bucks installed.

Had to replace mine only 3 weeks after I bought my 4runner. Looked like a small rock hit low on the driver's side and the crack went to the edge.

I replaced with Toyota glass and everything has been great. The place that did the replacement did a great job, and you can't tell at all.

I was so disappointed at the time :o/ But now I say, put in a new one and carry on! :o)
 
I had mine replaced at the dealer it still has the made in japan sticker on it ! I hope the next one will not break again sigh .....
 
Sounds like i made a mistake in having Safelite mess with it. I know better... I have to ask, what price range was the factory glass?
 
You may not think it was a rock, but it was. Look for a tiny little pit somewhere along the crack line. I've seen it a hundred times. You may not even hear it hit.

Unfortunately, that area where the defroster blows is absolutely the worst place for a chip.

My girlfriends Edge Sport had the whole front vista glass blow out with the tiniest of rock chips you could imagine right on the leading edge.

$1200 later and scared it will happen again.
 
If I remember correctly it cost around 500$ but paid 250$ with my insurance company. I will call tomorow and have a quote.
 
I'm with [MENTION=29011]Blitzkrieg[/MENTION] on this - it definitely started from a rock chip. Some chips can take a number of weeks (months?) before they crack, but others are a matter of hours. Especially in winter, the combination of moisture and temperature can be bad news.

I immediately put a sticker over the crack to keep moisture out, and get the chip repaired right away. I'm 3 years on the original windshield but in general people around here just accept that they need to replace it every 3 or so years.
 
Agreed.... more than likely a rock.
I had to have mine replaced, it cost my ins co ALOT more than 500.00....
I think it was 1100.00+ OEM Toyota!
 
Also - this is why I carry a $0 comprehensive deductible.

I've got some friends with a '13 SR5 up in Evergreen and they're on their 3rd windshield already.

Yeah. It's a sad fact living in most places but Colorado is really bad.

I double dog dare anybody to drive down the Valley twice and not admit they didn't hear that horrible clack, ching skid sound bouncing off the hood.

It sucks.
 
The gravel here is bad for windshields, but I'll gladly replace a windshield every year, than having a frame and body rot out every few years from salt.
 
I had my 2016 TEP for about three weeks before a small piece of gravel ricocheted off my windshield and put a good ding in it. I was vacationing in Colorado and a snow plow was out during a nice storm and that is all it took.
 
I'm glad I came across this thread, (but sorry to hear of the problems folks have had), as it spurred me to call my insurance company to find out if I had glass coverage as part of my policy.

I had full glass coverage when I was with Geico and had to have Safelite come to my home, (at no cost), some years ago to fix a chip/crack about the size of a dime. The repair lasted for the rest of the years we owned the vehicle.

When I called my current insurer, Amica, I was advised that they don't offer a glass policy in NC but it would only cost $35 per year to lower my comprehensive deductible to $0. This would fully cover windshields, trees falling on the vehicle, (we live in a heavily forested area of national and state forests as well as communities), and other sundry non-collision related woes.

For the peace of mind I decided the $35 out of pocket would be money well spent, especially in light of what's been reported in earlier posts.

Glass, trees, hail, and god damn shopping carts.

Literally Every car I have owned has needed a comprehensive paint repair because of ***holes and shopping carts.

(One of my last comprehensive claims was when I was still living in FL and working in federal law enforcement. Some little asswipe was shooting paintball at my white Acura Integra from a window in a condo across the way. I used a little of my ballistics experience to figure where the shots were coming from and determined which window it was. Sure enough, I saw the little bastid. His mother about crapped herself when I came over, pulled out my badge and reported what her angelic children and friends were up to. Needless to say, it stopped right quick. :AK47:)
 
I don't have any hard data for this, but I think (over time) a windshield can crack from the stress of winter, summer, vibration and defrost heat. I have a 2000 Tundra and a 95 Nissan PU that both have horizontal cracks. I can find no evidence of a rock chip on either one.

I don't but this for a fairly new vehicle but for mine that are 15 and 21 years old - it's a possibility. I don't plan to get these fixed; however I have replaced two windshields in 2 other cars due to bird strikes! That makes a big mark!
