Craigs List follies......

I hate selling on CL, but it's free and easy. I decided to sell an'87 4X4 Toyota truck I have. I have around 3300.00 in the truck, and the trans is making a racket in 3rd and 5th. I bought the truck for my son, but he couldn't use it, so I put it on the road. I put it on CL for 2350.00 obo, (which is too much), admitting that the trans needed attention. I would take 2,000.00 for it but not much less. I had one response in Spanish, (which I don't speak), an offer to trade for a 4 wheeler, a bunch of "I'll give you 1500.00 it take it or leave it" offers, a "will you take payments?", one that simply returned my ad to me with a 1-800 number, and a "Hello, I want buy you truk. Will send cashers chek for $2500.00 for you trouble".:frusty: No one even came to see it. I like having it around, but don't really need it. It's like that pair of boots you keep at the back door and never knock the mud off of. It's a great parts chaser/landfill/lawn work/snowmobile vehicle. I pulled the ad and will pull the trans on Monday. Anyone else gone through this?

I had a lot of trouble trying to sell my 1985 Pickup 2wd. It was in really nice shape and I had done a LOT of work to it, so I was asking $3750. Way too much for one of these, but I just needed to try and get at least most of my money back out of it. Anyways, it took about two months to finally get a buyer, an older lady who had one some money in the lottery. Lucky for me, my truck was exactly what she wanted and she paid me my asking price. So I guess with craigslist everyone is just expecting to get some awesome deal on everything, and I too had a lot of those 1-800 calls, people offering me like $500, and even an offer of a civic and a 4 wheeler. So yeah, craigslist can be annoying, but I have made a lot of money from other things on it.

Toyota trucks & 4runners sell like hotcakes here in Hampton Roads....try putting ad in the Richmond & Norfolk Craigslist ads....

I've sold a lot of stuff on CL, but I always meet somewhere public. To avoid the robo-calls, spell out part of your phone number.

All good ideas, especially spelling out the number. I always wondered why people did that. I knew I was asking too much, but hated to lose a thousand bucks on it. I guess I'll do the transmission and maybe try to sell it come hunting season. It doesn't have AC, (mentioned it in the ad), and with Summer coming, that scared off a few people as well.

Unfortunately since craigslist is free, people with no money can bother you. If you don't have much luck, maybe spend the money and post an ebay motors listing? Ebay is packed with serious buyers - after all - they need to commit when they make the purchase and it cost them money to buy the car. Also, a car like your 4runner will be looked at nation wide on ebay. Tons of potential buyers out there. If it has a realistic buy it now, it will sell fast.

Otherwise you will have to wait it out on craigs.
