Crank pulley woes

Hey all I've been having a generous amount of wobbling on my crank pulley at idle for quiet sometime. Let me give you guys the back story...

I did t/b and w/p almost a year ago on my 2000 3.4 5speed in the process of doing the R&R I managed to crack the center dampener. So naturally I replaced it with a brand new Oem pulley. A few months went by and I give my buddy a jump and notice the pulley was wobbling at idle. As soon as I give it any kind of throttle it straightens out.

So today I decided. To tear it down again and replace the pulley as it falls under warranty. I noticed the woodruff key also had a little bit of a rounding to it so I replaced it as well. I didn't see any unusual wear on the pulley from last year. But it is STILL wobbling with the new pulley. I am trying to rule out the crank neither front main nor rear main were leaking. It drives fine and doesn't have an abnormal rough idle. I do get a few weird clunks when shifting into gear and applying an actual load...

Any inputs would be great. This is being a tough one to diagnose....

I take you mean the harmonic balancer. How does the actual crank pulley look? Any cracks in it?

Are you still using the same crank bolt? Torquing it to 217ft/lb?

Technically it is not a harmonic balance it is more of a dampener but that's besides the point. Tthe past two pulleys have been brand new ans same with the bolts. Torque 217ft/lbs The pulley looked good but woodruff key was a little worn so I replaced it but it still has the wobbles at idle....

Since you say it's straightens right out with any kind of throttle I'm thinking it's normal. If you really had a wobble problem with the front of the crank (either the pulley or crank itself) I think you would have had a major issue right away with it. The end of a crank is not going to take something wobbling on it very long before it gives way. How about a video of this wobble?

I broke my phone last week so no video until I get a new one. Trust me it will be doing it for awhile.....I was talking to a few old timers and they were telling me that it probably I'd nothing bad because it straightens out. Plus I've been driving around with like that for maybe a year or so. The engine does seem to vibrate a little more then the 3.4 in my girls runner. I've messed with all the belts for tension on it but still no dice....

Any update, mine does the same thing...

unfortunantely no man.....it still does it even with replacing it twice!! brand new oem from my workand still wobbles. I'm not sure whats causing it, im just going to run it untill the damn thing lets loose. I've checked and messed with all different things but still a wobble. has to be something internal

i am so curios... dose it make ant sounds that you only hear it from inside the truck... mine dose this after TB and WP replacement and it disappear with any throttle . we should just keep this thread a life until someone figure it out.

This happened to my truck. Problem was an improperly torqued bolt which stripped. My woodruff key was sheared in half, and my crankshaft had to be re-tapped. If the crankshaft is messed up, you're left with the option of: leaving it as is and hoping all goes well, a motor swap, or a painful motor tear down.

It's very important to properly install the harmonic balancer / pulley. A new bolt is also recommended.

I upgraded to the lighter weight URD crankshaft pulley (which is no longer made), but I believe LC engineering also offers one?

You happen to know what spec foot pounds is?

spec is 217 ftlbs, ive raplaced bolt twice woodruff key and harmonic balancer. i believe it is a bent crank snout some how. i pulled up all the vehicle info on TIS and it said there was a w/p t/b replacement done at 21,xxx due to leaking w/p maybe something happened then? but other then that who knows. I will just run it untill it blows then replace engine. I've replaced and checked as much as i could sooo far that I can think of

It was said above for 217 which sounds right to me. Some shops will simply hit it with an air impact and call it good... It needs to be properly torqued.

I think I'm going to leave mine alone because I hate this engine. I've already been through 2 sets of head gaskets and one entire head. So screw it. hahahah

Reviving this thread.

How did this turn out? I have the same issue on a 3.4 motor with TRD S/C and 120k. Snout looks perfect, key looks perfect, factory pulley and URD pulley and new bolt torqued to 217ftlb do the same exact thing. I have video of the bolt in slow mo and you can clearly see run out. No oil leaks, no odd noises except for cold starts. Which I’m not sure if it’s the crank or something else.

EDIT: I’d like to add that Gadget said his 3.4 has done it since day one. He also stated that some 97 cranks just had some wobble. Mines an 04 Tacoma. It’s really weird.
