Crashed my baby. Totaled?

Had someone swerve in front of me and I hit a parked car going 15 or 20mph. Road was damp and anti lock brakes got me. I could've stopped without them. Damage to bumper, fender, hood and headlight. Still drives fine.

Anyone think insurance is going to total my baby. I would gladly fix it myself. Any advice?
I paid too much for it and have a lot invested, way more than its worth.

After I picked the broken pieces of lights out.

Doesn't look totaled to me. Couple grand or so. Your truck looks to be in really good shape other wise so the adjuster should go off blue book and that'll be more than the repairs.

Thanks for the replys.

My last fender bender was 25 years ago so not much experience dealing with insurance. Have full coverage.

See lots of trucks on Craigslist being parted out with damage that doesn't look too bad.

If I since that the adjuster is going to total it I will stop the entire process if possible and repair it myself, gives me an excuse to get a plate bumper.

Also deactivating the ABS as soon as possible.

Ouch! Certainly looks fixable, though. May be worth sourcing the parts and fixing on your own.

Personal experience, unfortunately dealing with this twice in the last three years, I've ran into the following:

Insurance companies will adjust the value if you can provide reciepts of work done OR the purchased items on the vehicle. They will than pull KBB & local area's and do value. What unfortunately you have to watch for is the amount valued by a shop, and you can go to MULTIPLE shops, to get a quote to help adjust your value.

Once you get insurance quote's I will gladly assist in giving my personal experience. In my build thread is my unfortunate Tacoma death =(. I purchased it for 35k, put 4k into it(had receipts provided to the insurance agent in charge). A year later the accident happened and since I had one of the 100 Tacoma's made with the features, they couldn't find one but a 'close' one near by and kbb caused them to give me over 35k for mine. Now I paid off what I owed and pocketed the 2500 left over!

Previously before that I had a VW and that backfired, stupid VW. They wouldn't give me more than 22k, and I owed 28k. I had GAP so, that paid for me buying GAP for the rest of my life =)

Before that I had a later rear end me sitting still in my 92 Toyota with 300k on it, The damage was 700.00 and the vehicle bluebooked at 600. They wanted to total it so I went to about 5 shops till I found one who gave me a 300.00 quote(that was them doing it also with reman parts).

So, in that regards things can go many ways. Educate YOURSELF, before doing any talking to the insurance agent. They also will have a base and max, be patient and it will work out. Let us know and if you want to shoot me a PM i will gladly give you my e-mail.

Don't forget to pull the ABS dash light. Mine got real annoying after a while.

Here's what I did with my xterra: I had them replace all but the front bumper and I took the $500 for it and bought a $900 plate bumper

Worth it.

Even if they total it, it doesn't mean they have to take it. You can do an owner-retained total and they'll deduct the scrap value from your payout. For example, if they total it at a value of $6000 and the scrap value is $1500, you can keep the truck and they write you a check for $4500 (minus deductible of course).

Be advised that usually means you'll have a salvage title moving forward, though.

I was just about to say the same thing. Thanks for saving me the trouble. :amen:

I have a bumper to sell from my '00 if you're interested, and it has the fog lights. Also, there's a guy just north of Marysville that parts out 4Runners who might even have the parts you need in the right color. You can find him on craigslist or on this forum as deathcougar.

if they do total it...buy it back for a few hundred bucks and fix it. In TN if its 10+ years old title stays clean. That's a real easy fix too.

Clean the heck out of it before the adjuster comes by...helps with the check!

Thanks again for the replys, I definitely feel a little better now.

I am going to tell them to not worry about replacing the bumper and I'm going to give 4xinnovations a call about ordering a plate. I've been on the verge of ordering one anyway.

Would be great if I could get some cash back to help.

I wouldn't go backward lol. From very capable 4Runner to decently capable xterra with no ground clearance

Don't tell them anything like that! Let them pay for the part of the new bumper. They will likely just cut you a check on the spot once you agree on the amount of damages. You can spend it on whatever you like.

Not all insurance companies just cut a check. I know mine told me they'd just pay the shop to fix it so I told them fix all but the front and they cut me a check for the difference.
