Small updates....
A few minor mods have been completed.
-H11 to H9 mod: I've yet to purchase actual HIDs but, so for now, I've opted for the H11>H9 swap for the low beam. I ended up getting a set of Phillips off Ebay for very cheap along with an extension for the factory wiring (just in case). This mod took all of 10 minutes using a Dremel to notch out the tabs. I am extremely impressed with the increased light output as well as the whiter color (very little, if any, yellow coloring). I've kept a close eye on the housing and have noticed no melting or other negative side effects.
-Black interior conversion: I've painted nearly all the lower, gray interior panels black using the Duplicolor Vinyl & Plastic spray. After riding in several newer 4runners along with my buddy's '16 Tacoma, I decided to convert to mostly black. This is of course in keeping with the newer 4runner's scheme in that everything above the window line will remain gray. So far, I've only the drivers door panel, lower center console/shifter pieces and black carpet remain the original gray...otherwise, the rest are now black. I love it so far but who knows how it'll hold up. Time will tell...

Thanks bud! It's still doing great...just like having an Android phone/tablet in your dash. And I don't have the JBL and mine was literally plug and play. I imagine it's a little more work but think it can still be done.

I have a few questions for you regarding your android Head Unit:
Does it have 1gb or 2gb of RAM?
If 1gb, is that enough or should I pay an extra $35 for the 2gb?
Do you have the JBL system?
If so did you have to purchase the special JBL harness?
I am wanting to get a Joying android head unit and I have the JBL system in my vehicle. Joying said that I would need this harness for the install, however by looking at the photos of the harness it looks like that grey plug would be the only thing plugged into the vehicle. There are three harnesses total coming from the vehicle so that would leave 2 empty. I feel that I would need another harness to get steering wheel controls to work. This stuff is confusing.

See below for my lengthy response. Let me know if you have any other questions. Ask away as I was in the same boat when I ordered mine on not knowing what would be involved.
My unit is uses the "older" Kit Kat version (Build 4.4x) and only has 1gb. Only the newer, Lollipop OS (5.xx) have the 2gb from the factory/Chinese resellers. Supposedly this was a combination of limitations involved with these lazily, reverse-engineered/coded Android OS in the beginning and is only now being tweaked. Having said that, there are ways to add in 2gb but its pretty involved (open up your unit and de-solder old memory, solder back on upgraded memory). Check out the AndroidDeveloper Forums for TONS of info on these and custom software hacks.
In short, I'd say yes. Although, I haven't had a single issue with mine slowing down in my day to day use. It only pauses or takes a few extra seconds to swap screens when I'm intentionally doing way too many tasks. To put your mind at ease, I routinely have Waze running for live GPS directions while playing through my 40k+ MP3 Library via Poweramp (which is easily the BEST music player for these HU, zero delays with my Gigantic library) and it doesn't break a sweat.
The other part to your question you need to consider is the fitment between both units. Is the external dimensions of the 1gb unit the same as the 2gb unit? IIRC, they both had the external buttons correct? I ask because all the 7" screen, all touch-screen looking versions are more universal fit. To exactly fit the opening in our 4runners, the external measurements needs to be ~200mx100m, the smaller ~175mmx100 or whatever they are all require traditional trim kits (which will need to be cut even more themselves) to fill in the gap. Mine fits exactly in each, curved corner. Granted this may not be important to you.
No, my system was the stock Non-JBL setup.
If you buy the Toyota specific radios from Joying, they will include THIS power harness with the package. The one they told you would appear to be an additional harness to be used along with the one they will provide in the package. From looking that Ebay link you provided, it looks like that connector would replace one of the 3 ends going into the connector supplied by Joying. I had only the single connection (same as the one linked) in the back that hooked directly into my factory harness connectors. Once connected, the one they provided should allow your steering wheel controls to work with the radio. Mine was the most "plug-and-play" experience I've had with any of my mods....literally no issues. /RANT

Forgot to add how awesome the Torque App is for these things when combined with a Bluetooth OBD II sensor. I've added in the custom formula for the live Tranny Temp readouts as well which is always handy to have.
Also me after yours is setup as you'll need to download the custom steering wheel control program that lets you control everything (Pandora, any music player, Spotify, etc.) as the factory program is very limited in compatibility.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Here is a video the head unit that I am wanting to install which does require a kit and ~2mm of trimming. It's just that I need certain harnesses for the JBL to get everything to work and I haven't found anyone who replaced the JBL system with an Android. I am also excited to use the torque app with it and interested to see Trans Temp readings. Once/if I get the unit I will probably be contacting you to ask about the software needed for the steering controls.

S2K Retrofit
Soooo, I recently stumbled upon some S2K AP1 projectors on Ebay with OEM Phillips 85122+ bulbs and OEM ballasts so that's the route i'll be going with my upcoming retrofit. I was looking hard at the newer Mini D2S 4.0 setup but these should be better and I like to stay OEM when possible.
These were previously installed into the former owner's headlights by CustomLightz with the optional color mod (washer spacing). The cutoff doesn't appear to be blurry, even at close range, so I may leave it as is. Also, from what I can tell, the bowls appear to be in great condition. Needless to say, I'm pumped! I'll be sure to update as the project progresses.
I'll throw up some beam shots later for shits and gigs....

Fast forward to the current Retro status...
One of the Mitsubishi OEM ballasts went out so I decided to pick up a set of Denso Slims. The revised retro build is as follows:
-Phillips 85122+ (older bulb so will upgrade)
-S2K AP1s+ OEM E30 Lens + Lens Spacer Tuning (currently at 1 extra)
-OEM Denso D2S Ballasts
I haven't had as much time lately and have yet to take any good pictures but will be sure to post some up as I finish. Still working on getting the finalized mounting setup for the projectors.

Huge update, after nearly 5 years of procrastination, I now have the first iteration of my audio build installed. Details are updated in the first post. I went ahead and knocked out the Big 3 in 1/0 and deadoning while I had it apart. Also dyed my carpet black to match my panels while I was at it.
Super happy with the sound as its got the tight, punchy SQ I was going for, but already thinking of running another amp and going crazy with a custom 3-way setup...gotta thank my years of surfing DIYMA for that one. Lol Been tuning with the (now oldschool) 3sixty.2 DSP. Dialing in the xover and T/A but im impressed for what I've got. I'll post pictures at some point but it's the usual stealth install (amps under both seats) so really not much to see.
I've got a few maintenance items to knock out along with installing new LR BJs (grease zerk broke off so it was warantied) along with tracking down my suspension/frame squeek. Got 198,500 on it now so only 1,500 miles away from the big 200k! Like it more now than I did when I bought it back in 2011 and hoping for 300k.

Another update on my now ever-changing audio setup, I got a good deal on a set of the 9" Volvo C70 midbass. These are verified to be produced by Dynaudio although there is some variation on how much they share with there retail MW172/MW182 counterparts.
Lucky for me, those huge 6x9 openings allow for a large driver to be installed with zero cutting. These also aren't too deep at only 3" mounting depth. With a few quick cuts, I made my own 1" deep baffles that fit perfectly. Only thing left is the back of the door card which will probably need trimming as to avoid nasty rear reflections.
I also bought a cheap set of Fountek FR88EX to use for now as a wideband in a 2way setup. These should be able to cut down to sub-1000hz and pair well with the 9" Dyn (heard they roll off around 500-750hz).
For now, they will each get 150 watts. However, I have a spare T4.900D (same board as my PPI 900.4) sitting around that I may throw in and give the midbass 450x2! Gotta love headroom. Haha. I'll see how they do on the 150 first though once I get everything retuned.
Finally, I may end up cutting up the A pillars for the FR88 and tweeter mount in a possible 3way setup. Got a spare set for cheap so don't mind some cutting. Pumped to see how it sounds.

Not at the moment but I can take a few when I get back home. Anything in particular you want to see? Currently got my passenger door card and A-pillars pulled to figure out better door bracing/deadoning so could get a shot of the 9s if you wanted those.

Gotcha. No problem man, I'll snap some when I get back in town tomorrow or Monday. My interior was the same way and I can tell you it was a massive improvement imo, especially the carpet.
Sure there are a few silver scrape marks where the door or trim was scuffed hard but I had black scuffs on the gray so no worse to me. Plus it's super easy to touch-up.

Got bored today and tried this...plastiderp eyelids. Never really liked how dated our open, rounded headlights are up front and thought i'd try this. Probably end up taking it off but will let it stand a few days and adjust the lines. Actually like the concept but the main thing that bothers me about it is the contrast b/w gloss and matte and onvious headlight to hood lines, making it look cheap. Go figure. Lol
