Cruise control (resume) speed memory ???

Is there any reasoning that can be given as to when the cruise control remembers the speed and will resume and when it will not ??

My cruise control will resume speed but only seems to when it is not interupted by slowing to much. I tried down shifting at 45 thinking it was a downshift that cleared the memory but it resumed after being put back into drive. It will never resume after coming to a stop and sometimes after slowing down for something.

Some of you may know this, I didn't.

I learned something just at the last of my trip today and didn't have time to see if it had any better effect on keeping "the last speed set". I generally use the brake to release the cruise control, (thought I had learned everything on my runner), but I learned today to turn off the cruise control without the brake, pull the cruise lever back toward you, like the windshield fluid squirter switch. It releases the cruise control but leaves it on. Next time out I will see it this has a more relible speed memory so I can just use "resume".

This sort of builds on/backs up what SeaSparrow says.

Turning the cruise control system OFF and turning off the engine will clear the speed memory.

If the system is working properly, disengaging the cruise control by tapping on the brake or pulling the lever towards you will retain the last used speed in memory, reactivated by pushing the lever to "resume."

While we're talking about nifty cruise control tips... Tapping the cruise lever momentarily up or down adds/subtracts 1 mph from the current set speed.

Doesn't anybody bother to RTFM anymore?

The 4R, as with many vehicles, (frustratingly) disengages and forgets the set cruise speed when the vehicle slows below a certain speed...probably 35mph, IIRC. And yes, there are some vehicles where you can hit resume from a dead stop and it'll return to the set speed...or at least remember the set speed and allow you to resume once you get above some minimum threshold. It's likely the specific functionality depends on the product liability opinion of the attorney for the company that actually designed the speed control module for a particular vehicle brand.

I'd love to find a way that the cruise circuit remains in the on position after turning off the engine, much like my wife's Honda Accord always did. Neither my 4Runner nor my Kia Sorento will keep the cruise circuit active once the key has been turned off.

there seems to be some kind of percentage of slowing down that disables resume function. like if you are going 70 and slow down by 10, it will resume but if youre going 40 and slow down by 10 it wont.

its been a while but I actually field tested it myself but I cant remember exactly what I found out. gonna have to give it another go

also, on every car ive ever driven, cancelling with the cancel button and cancelling by hitting the brake does the same thing. starts slowing you down but leaves cruise on with the last speed remembered
